Robert Stopford (bishop)
Robert Wright Stopford, (20 February 1901 – 13 August 1976) was a British Anglican bishop. Early life and education Stopford was born in Garston, Merseyside (then in Lancashire) to John William Stopford, a timber merchant born in Galway, Ireland. He was educated at Coatham School in Redcar and Liverpool College, where he was Head of House (Littler's). He continued his education at Hertford College, Oxford, where he graduated with a Master of Arts degree. At Oxford he obtained first classes in classical honour moderations (1922) and modern history (1924). He was subsequently an Honorary Fellow of Hertford College, Oxford, and a Fellow of King's College London. He received a Doctor of Divinity degree from the University of London and a Doctor of Civil Law degree from the University of Durham. Stopford was married with two children. Robert Stopford (politician)
Robert Stopford (12 February 1862 – 28 January 1926) was an English-born Australian politician. He is the great-great-grandfather of comedian and actress Rebel Wilson. Biography He was born at Upholland in Lancashire, to property owner John Stopford and Jane Elizabeth, ''née'' Yates. He attended University College, Liverpool, and became a medical practitioner, working in Ireland and Southport before travelling to New Zealand in 1902 and settling in Wellington. Stopford had been a supporter of the Liberal Party in England but joined the Independent Political Labour League (forerunner to the present day New Zealand Labour Party) whilst living there. Stopford also became involved in the Plunket Society, an infant welfare movement founded by Truby King. In 1905 he moved to Auckland accepting a job running the local hydropath institute. Robert Stopford (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Sir Robert Stopford (5 February 1768 – 25 June 1847) was a Royal Navy officer and politician whose career spanned over 60 years, from the French Revolutionary Wars to the Egyptian–Ottoman War. Naval career Stopford was the third son of James Stopford, 2nd Earl of Courtown, and his wife Mary (née Powys). He joined the Royal Navy in 1780 and became a Lieutenant in 1785. Commander Stopford was captain of between December 1789 and October 1790. In 1790 he was promoted to captain at the age of 22 and was briefly captain of HMS ''Lowestoffe''. Stopford fought at the Battle of the Glorious First of June in 1794, commanding the frigate (32). During the battle ''Aquilon'' had the task of standing off and repeating the signals from the flagship.
