Robert Patterson (naturalist, Born 1863)
Robert Patterson (1863–1931) was an Irish naturalist. He was the son of Richard Patterson, the grandson of Robert Patterson FRS and the nephew of Robert Lloyd Patterson (1836-1906). Robert Patterson was interested in every branch of natural history but mainly birds. He was a member of the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society and the Belfast Naturalists' Field Club The Belfast Naturalists' Field Club is a club of naturalists based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Founded in 1863, the club was an important part of the education system for Victorian naturalists and worked largely through first-hand field studies ... and a founder of the Ulster Fisheries and Marine Biology Association. He also founded the People's Palace, or Patterson Museum, in Belfast which opened in 1904. Naturalist
Natural history is a domain of inquiry involving organisms, including animals, fungi, and plants, in their natural environment, leaning more towards observational than experimental methods of study. A person who studies natural history is called a naturalist or natural historian. Natural history encompasses scientific research but is not limited to it. Robert Patterson (naturalist, Born 1802)
Robert Patterson, FRS (1802–1872) was an Irish businessman and naturalist born in Belfast, Ireland. Biography The eldest son of Robert Patterson (1750–1831), owner of a mill-furnishing business in Belfast established in 1786, Robert Patterson was born into a wealthy family. He was educated first at the Belfast Academy under the direction of a Dr. Bryce, and then at the Belfast Academical Institution. Here he won a prize for an essay on the natural history of Lough Neagh. When his father died in 1831, Patterson took over management of the family business, eventually marrying Mary Ferrar, one of whose ancestors had come to Ireland as a captain in Schomburg's Horse regiment. The newly-weds settled at No. 3 College Square North, Belfast, where most of his 11 children were born. Robert Lloyd Patterson (1836-1906)
Sir Robert Lloyd Patterson (1836–1906) was an Irish naturalist and linen merchant. Biography Patterson was the second son of Robert Patterson F.R.S. In August 1902, he was awarded a knighthood for services to the Belfast Chamber of Commerce. Robert Lloyd Patterson wrote several zoological papers in the Irish Naturalist and the Report and Proceedings of the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society and a book titled ''The Birds, Fishes and Cetacea of Belfast Lough'' (1880). On his death Robert Lloyd Patterson bequeathed his art collection to the Belfast Corporation. Belfast Natural History And Philosophical Society
The Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society was founded in 1821 to promote the scientific study of animals, plants, fossils, rocks and minerals. History The Society was founded by George Crawford Hyndman, James Lawson Drummond, James Grimshaw, James McAdam, Robert Patterson, Robert Simms, Francis Archer, the Thomas Dix Hincks, Edward Hincks and Edmund Getty. Five years later in 1826 Alexander Henry Haliday and William Thompson both joined. In 1823, the Society's collection and the small collection begun in 1788 in the rooms of the Belfast Reading Society and that of the Belfast Literary Society were moved to Belfast Academical Institution where James Bryce was centralising Belfast's rapidly expanding natural history holdings.
