Robert Anderson (Australian General)
Brigadier General Sir Robert Murray McCheyne Anderson, (6 August 1865 – 30 December 1940) was a successful Sydney businessman and Australian Army officer. He served as head of the London-based Administrative Headquarters for the Australian Imperial Force during much of the First World War, finishing the conflict as a brigadier general. Early life and business career Anderson was born on 6 August 1865 in The Mint, Sydney, the son of a policeman. After attending Sydney Grammar School, he worked at the Bank of New Zealand. Initially working in New Zealand, he was made manager of a branch of the bank upon his return to Sydney.Walsh, 1979, pp. 62–63 Anderson was a member of the militia, having been commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1886. Allen Taylor & Company is a timber company in Australia. Founded by Allen Taylor in 1893 in Rozelle, Sydney, it is a subsidiary of the Pentarch Group. By the time Taylor was knighted in 1911, he was on the board of numerous companies. He was an Alderman and Mayor of the Annandale Borough, an Alderman and Lord Mayor of Sydney Municipal Council and a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. In the 1970s, Allen Taylor & Company supplied timbers used in the Sydney Opera House. In April 1970 Allen Taylor & Company was taken over by Blue Metal Industries which in turn was purchased by Boral in 1982. Melbourne University Publishing (MUP) is the book publishing arm of the University of Melbourne. The press is currently a member of the Association of University Presses. The ''Australian Dictionary of Biography'' (ADB or AuDB) is a national co-operative enterprise founded and maintained by the Australian National University (ANU) to produce authoritative biographical articles on eminent people in Australia's history. Initially published by Melbourne University Press in a series of twelve hard-copy volumes between 1966 and 2005, the dictionary has been published online since 2006 by the National Centre of Biography (NCB) at ANU, which has also published ''Obituaries Australia'' (OA) since 2010. The ''Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918'' is a 12-volume series covering Australian involvement in the First World War. The series was edited by C. E. W. Bean, who also wrote six of the volumes, and was published between 1920 and 1942. The first seven volumes deal with the Australian Imperial Force while other volumes deal with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force at Rabaul, the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Flying Corps and the home front; the final volume is a photographic record. The Australian War Memorial (AWM) is a national war memorial, war museum, museum and archive dedicated to all Australians who died as a result of war, including peacekeeping duties. William Birdwood, 1st Baron Birdwood
Field Marshal William Riddell Birdwood, 1st Baron Birdwood (13 September 1865 – 17 May 1951), was a British Army officer. He saw active service in the Second Boer War on the staff of Lord Kitchener. He saw action again in the First World War as commander of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, leading the landings on the peninsula and then the evacuation later in the year, before becoming commander-in-chief of the Fifth Army on the Western Front during the closing stages of the war.
