Riverside (electoral District)
Riverside was a territorial electoral district (Canada), electoral district in Yukon. The district elected one member to the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 1992 to 2002. At the 2002 Yukon general election, 2002 election, the district was dissolved into Whitehorse Centre and Riverdale North. Whitehorse, Yukon
Whitehorse () is the capital of Yukon, and the largest city in Northern Canada. It was incorporated in 1950 and is located at kilometre 1426 (Historic Mile 918) on the Alaska Highway in southern Yukon. Whitehorse's Downtown Whitehorse, downtown and Riverdale, Yukon, Riverdale areas occupy both shores of the Yukon River, which rises in British Columbia and meets the Bering Sea in Alaska. The city was named after the White Horse Rapids for their resemblance to the mane of a white horse, near Miles Canyon Basalts, Miles Canyon, before the river was dammed. Because of the city's location in the Whitehorse valley and relative proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the climate tends to be milder. Joyce Hayden
Joyce Sandra Hayden (September 20, 1931 – March 7, 2009) was a Canadian politician, who represented the electoral district of Whitehorse South Centre in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 1989 to 1992. She was a member of the Yukon New Democratic Party. Background Hayden was born in Glaslyn, Saskatchewan and raised in Birch Lake, Saskatchewan. She married Earle Hayden in 1949, and the couple moved to the Yukon in 1953. The 1996 Yukon general election was held on September 30, 1996 to elect the seventeen members of the 29th Yukon Legislative Assembly in Yukon Territory, Canada. The governing Yukon Party, a conservative party, was defeated by the social democratic New Democratic Party (NDP). The NDP formed a new majority government of the territory with 11 seats. Yukon Party
The Yukon Party, formerly the Yukon Progressive Conservative Party, is a conservative political party in Yukon, Canada. History The Yukon Progressive Conservative Party was founded in April 1978. Long time Yukon legislator Hilda Watson was elected as the party's first leader defeating Yukon MP Erik Nielsen by one vote. Watson had been a member of the territorial Legislative Council since 1970, and became the first woman in Canadian history to lead a political party into a general election. However, she was unable to win a seat in the 1978 election, and consequently resigned. Chris Pearson then became the leader of the party and was able to get a position in the government. The Yukon New Democratic Party (YNDP; ) is a social democratic political party in the Yukon, Canada. It is the territorial section of the federal New Democratic Party. The Yukon NDP first formed the government of the territory under the leadership of Tony Penikett from 1985 to 1992, and under the leadership of Piers McDonald from 1996 to 2000. Scott Kent is a Canadian politician, who was elected to in the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the 2000, 2011, 2016 and 2021 Yukon elections.
