Rise (Eddie Turner Album)
''Rise'' is the debut album by the American musician Eddie Turner, released in 2005. It was nominated for a Blues Music Award for best new artist debut. Turner supported the album with a North American tour. Production Produced by Kenny Passarelli, the album was recorded at Stepbridge Studios, in Santa Fe. Born in Cuba, Turner incorporated Afro-Cuban influences on several tracks. "Gangster of Love" is a cover of the Johnny "Guitar" Watson song. "The Wind Cries Mary" was written by Jimi Hendrix. "Resurrection" and "The River" are instrumentals; the latter combined hip hop beats with a National guitar. "Play It Cool" is a cover of the Freddie King song; Turner included it as his "standard" blues tune. Critical reception The ''Courier & Press'' wrote that "Turner's spacey, jazz-informed solos and crunchy blues-rock foundations evoke guitarists as diverse as Jeff Beck, James Blood Ulmer, Vernon Reid and Tommy Bolin." Eddie Turner
Eddie "Devil Boy" Turner is a blues guitarist born in Cuba and raised in Chicago. A former member of the Otis Taylor band, he is currently signed to Toronto's NorthernBlues Music. Turner began to play the guitar when he was twelve. He attended the University of Colorado in the early-1970s, and while there played in the region's first punk/R&B band The Immortal Nightflames, then later toured with Grammy Award nominee Tracy Nelson from Mother Earth for a short time Subsequently, Turner joined the Legendary 4-Nikators (an oldies band formed by members of Zephyr and Flash Cadillac), then when David and Candy Givens reformed Zephyr Eddie was tapped to be lead guitarist and appears on the 1982 HEARTBEAT lp. After the death of the singer Candy Givens he abandoned music to work in real-estate in Denver. In the mid 1990's Turner joined the Ron Miles electric band appearing on the 1996 cd My Cruel Heart. The ''Evansville Courier & Press'' is a daily newspaper based in Evansville, Indiana. It serves about 30,000 daily and 50,000 Sunday readers. History The ''Evansville Courier'' was founded in 1845 by William Newton, a young attorney. Its first issue was printed two years before the city had a charter. The ''Evansville Press'' was founded in 1906 by Edward W. Scripps as an afternoon daily. Both papers were separate and fierce competitors until 1937, when the ''Evansville Press'' was flooded and the ''Evansville Courier'' agreed to print their competitor's paper. ''The Penguin Guide to Blues Recordings'' is an encyclopedia of blues music albums released on CD. Content The book was released on 31 October 2006 and was written by Tony Russell and Chris Smith with contributions by Neil Slaven, Ricky Russell and Joe Faulkner. Russell in particular is known as a musical historian, working closely with programs presented on BBC Radio, as well as documentaries on the blues. Freddie King
Freddie King (born Fred Christian; September 3, 1934December 28, 1976), also billed as Freddy King, was an American blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is considered one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" (along with Albert King and B. B. King, none of whom was a blood relative). Known for his soulful and powerful voice and distinctive guitar playing, King had a major influence on electric blues music and on many later blues guitarists. Born in Gilmer, Texas, King became acquainted with the guitar at the age of six. He started learning the guitar from his mother and his uncle. King moved to Chicago when he was a teenager; there he formed his first band the Every Hour Blues Boys with guitarist Jimmie Lee Robinson and drummer Frank "Sonny" Scott.
