Rimington
Rimington is a rural village and civil parish in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, England. The population of the civil parish was 382 at the 2001 Census, however at the 2011 Census Middop was included with Rimington giving a total of 480. It is east of Clitheroe and south of the A59 road. The village consists of the hamlets of Howgill, Martin Top, Newby, and Stopper Lane, and was formerly in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The parish adjoins the Ribble Valley parishes of Gisburn, Sawley, Downham, Twiston and Middop the Pendle parish of Barley-with-Wheatley Booth. History The village was listed in the Domesday Book as "Renistone". The name Boulton (Bolton) is listed in land deeds of 1302, and Robert Elwald son of Alan listed 1304. Since Tudor times, until the late 19th century, lead mining was an important industry around the village. Rimington, Ontario
Madoc is a township in Hastings County in Eastern Ontario, Canada. The township was named after legendary Welsh prince Madoc ap Owain Gwynedd, credited by some with discovering North America in 1170. There exists an alternative explanation, for which no evidence exists, that the name comes from a small Welsh village, Llanmadoc on the Gower Peninsula of Wales, not far from the city of Swansea. Its post office dates from 1836. The Dave Rimington Trophy is awarded to the player considered to be the best American football center in college football. Dave Rimington was a center who played at the University of Nebraska from 1979 to 1982. A member of the National College Football Awards Association, the Rimington Trophy serves as a fundraiser for the Boomer Esiason Foundation's fight against cystic fibrosis. In addition to recognizing the season's most outstanding center in college football, the Rimington Trophy also recognizes legendary centers from the past by presenting the President Gerald R. Ford Legendary Center Award. The award is presented annually to a former collegiate or professional center who was either a legend on the field or off the field by making extraordinary contributions through business, civic or philanthropic endeavors. Dave Rimington
David Brian Rimington (born May 22, 1960) is a former American college and professional football player who was a center in the National Football League (NFL) for seven seasons during the 1980s. Rimington played college football for the University of Nebraska, where he was two-time consensus All-American and received several awards recognizing him as the best college lineman in the country. He was selected in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft and played professionally for the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL. Rimington is the namesake of the Rimington Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation's top collegiate center. Michael Rimington
Lieutenant General Sir Michael Frederic Rimington, (23 May 1858 – 19 December 1928) was a British Army officer who commanded cavalry forces in the Second Boer War and First World War. After early service with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, "Mike" Rimington was given command of an irregular cavalry force in South Africa, known as "Rimington's Guides". He commanded them for a year before taking command of his regular regiment, and later a cavalry brigade. In 1914, with the outbreak of the First World War, he commanded the 1st Indian Cavalry Division and then the Indian Cavalry Corps on the Western Front, before retiring to home-service duties in 1916. He had one son, Reginald, who followed his father into the 6th Dragoons; he rose to command an armoured brigade in 1941, and was killed in North Africa. Sammy Rimington
Samuel Rimington (born 29 April 1942, in Paddock Wood, Kent, England), is an English jazz reed player. He has been an active New Orleans jazz revivalist since the late 1950s. Rimington played with Barry Martyn in 1959. He became a professional musician in 1960 when he joined the band of Ken Colyer. He stayed with Colyer until 1965 and then moved to the U.S. and worked with Big Bill Bissonnette's Easy Rider Jazz Band and the December Band. He made some jazz fusion recordings early in the 1970s, but most of his work has been in the New Orleans jazz vein, playing with Louis Nelson, Big Jim Robinson, Chris Barber, Kid Thomas Valentine, and Captain John Handy. He has recorded extensively as a bandleader since the early 1960s. Rimington's main influences were George Lewis on clarinet and Captain John Handy on alto sax. Stella Rimington
Dame Stella Rimington (born 13 May 1935) is a British author and former Director General of MI5, a position she held from 1992 to 1996. She was the first female DG of MI5, and the first DG whose name was publicised on appointment. In 1993, Rimington became the first DG of MI5 to pose openly for cameras at the launch of a brochure outlining the organisation's activities. Early life Rimington was born Stella Whitehouse in South London, England; her family moved from South Norwood to Essex in 1939, due to the danger of living in London during World War II. Her father got a job as chief draughtsman at a steel works in Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, and the family moved there. She described living through the Barrow Blitz as a small child, and becoming claustrophobic into adulthood, needing an exit route from any situation.
