Ride (band)
Ride are an English rock band formed in Oxford in 1988. The band consists of vocalists and guitarists Andy Bell and Mark Gardener, drummer Laurence "Loz" Colbert and bassist Steve Queralt. They have been recognised as one of the key pioneers of shoegaze, an alternative rock subgenre that emerged to prominence in the United Kingdom during the early 1990s. The band's first two albums, ''Nowhere'' (1990) and '' Going Blank Again'' (1992), have been critically acclaimed as two of the greatest shoegaze albums of all time. The latter's lead single, " Leave Them All Behind", was the band's most commercially successful song, reaching No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart. Both ''Going Blank Again'' and its 1994 follow-up, ''Carnival of Light'', peaked at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart. ''Nowhere'' is the debut album by British shoegaze band Ride, released on 15 October 1990. It received mixed reception on its initial release, but has since been reappraised in retrospect as a notable shoegaze album. Background and production Prior to the release of ''Nowhere'', Ride had previously released three EPs, '' a self-titled EP'', ''Play'', and '' Fall''; subsequent reissues of the album have featured songs from these EPs, especially its 20th anniversary edition in 2011. ''Nowhere'' was recorded with and partially produced by Marc Waterman, who backed out of the sessions, resulting in Alan Moulder mixing the final album. The band members were between 18 and 20 during the recording of ''Nowhere''. Mark Gardener described it as a "nighttime sort of record", and recalled the band working on the album in the studio during late-night hours and long sessions. Cheney School is a secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in Headington, Oxford, England. ''Interplay'' is the seventh studio album by English rock band Ride, released on 29 March 2024 through Wichita Recordings. It was written and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, and produced by Richie Kennedy, and the first album since 1996's ''Tarantula'' not produced by Erol Alkan. The album received positive reviews from critics. Critical reception ''Interplay'' received a score of 78 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on 12 critics' reviews, indicating "generally favorable" reception. ''This Is Not a Safe Place'' is the sixth studio album by English rock band Ride. The album was released on 16 August 2019, the date being announced on 23 April 2019 along with the release of the album's first single, "Future Love". The album is the band's second produced by English DJ Erol Alkan. Production After seeing on exhibition in 2018, Andy Bell was inspired by the work and thinking of American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. One symbol that Basquiat incorporated into his work was three slashes '///'. This was based upon historic graffiti markings used by American hobos to indicate an unsafe place. This influenced the album name and cover artwork. Basquiat is also referenced in the lyrics of Repetition. Bell stated that the album was influenced by the likes of Sonic Youth and the Fall and by "post-punk in general, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Public Image Ltd". ''Weather Diaries'' is the fifth studio album by English rock band Ride. The album was released on 16 June 2017, and is the first Ride album since 1996's ''Tarantula''. The album was produced by English DJ Erol Alkan and mixed by long-time Ride collaborator Alan Moulder. Release The album was supported by two singles: "Charm Assault", released on 21 February 2017, and "Home Is a Feeling" released the next day. The Japanese edition features the bonus track, which is the remix edition of "Home Is a Feeling", also with the limited edition Tote Bag. Reception Reviews were largely positive. Oasis are an English Rock music, rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. The group initially consisted of Liam Gallagher (lead vocals), Paul Arthurs, Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs (guitar), Paul McGuigan (musician), Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums). ''Carnival of Light'' is the third studio album by British rock band Ride, released in June 1994 via Creation Records. The album is named after a lost song by the Beatles. The album showcased the band's shift from shoegazing to a more traditional, folk rock sound. It was well received by some critics, magazine Select calling it "another fantastic British album in the old tradition" and reached the UK Top 5. However, by the end of 1994 even the band members had become disillusioned, referring to it amongst themselves as "Carnival of Shite", although in a 2022 interview Andy Bell stated that he had "made peace with it.
