Shoot Out The Lights
''Shoot Out the Lights'' is the sixth and final album by British husband-and-wife rock duo Richard and Linda Thompson. It was produced by Joe Boyd and released in 1982 on his Hannibal label. A critically acclaimed work, AllMusic's Mark Deming noted that ''Shoot Out the Lights'' has "often been cited as Richard Thompson's greatest work." History After their 1979 album '' Sunnyvista'' had sold poorly, Richard and Linda Thompson found themselves without a record deal. In the spring of 1980 they toured as the support act for Gerry Rafferty and in June of that year they recorded some demo tracks at Woodworm Studios in Oxfordshire.Smith, Dave, ''The Great Valerio - a study of the songs of Richard Thompson'', 2004 Later that same year and with the Thompsons still without a contract, Rafferty offered to finance and produce a new Richard and Linda Thompson album and then use his contacts in the industry to secure a contract for the album's release. The Rafferty-sponsored album was recor ...

Sweet Warrior
''Sweet Warrior'' is the thirteenth studio album by Richard Thompson, released in 2007. Thompson financed the recording of this album himself and then licensed the finished album to various labels for distribution. On its release, ''Sweet Warrior'' entered Amazon.com's top 20 for music sales. Overview The album's sleeve notes are prefaced by Sonnet LVII by Edmund Spenser, "Sweet warrior! when shall I have peace with you", one of his 1595 Amoretti sonnet cycle.''Sweet Warrior'', Richard Thompson (2007), Proper Records: PRPCD032, sleeve notes The track "Dad's Gonna Kill Me" was given an advance release via Thompson's own web site and iTunes. The song was singled out for praise by critics and featured prominently in Thompson's live performances in early 2007. This song's lyrics make extensive use of US military slang (the "Dad" of the title is GI slang for "Baghdad"), and convey the thoughts and feelings of an uneasy U.S. soldier fighting in Iraq. It was subsequently used on th ...

Front Parlour Ballads
''Front Parlour Ballads'' is the twelfth studio album by Richard Thompson, recorded in 2004. Released on the Cooking Vinyl label in August 2005, ''Front Parlour Ballads'' was literally a homemade album. Thompson's aim was to create an album that sounded small and intimate. It was hailed as his first solo, all acoustic album since 1981– but strictly speaking it's neither of those things – percussionist Debra Dobkin played on two tracks ("Let It Blow" and "My Soul, My Soul") and Thompson himself added electric guitar to the same two tracks. Thompson had a small studio built in his garage at home and recorded the tracks onto his laptop computer, adding his own overdubs as he deemed necessary. Dobkin's contributions were recorded in the same way. Thompson did not expect to sell many copies of ''Front Parlour Ballads''. The critics, as usual, acclaimed the new release, but rather more surprising were strong early sales in both the U.S. and Britain, and ''Front Parlour Ballads'' ...

The Old Kit Bag
__NOTOC__ ''The Old Kit Bag'' is the eleventh studio album by British folk rock singer-songwriter and guitarist Richard Thompson, released in 2003 on the Cooking Vinyl label. Background The title refers to the World War I marching song "Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag". When asked if the album had a theme, Thompson had no immediate answer, then said "I suppose the title is a theme of sorts. It's a reference to the old World War I song, 'Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag,' which is about smiling and whistling a happy tune as the Germans rain shells down on you." After years of being a prestigious but small-selling signing with a big label, Thompson signed with the small, independent and independently-minded Cooking Vinyl label in 2002. The first fruits of this new partnership was ''The Old Kit Bag''. Thompson had financed the recording himself and relied on his new label for marketing and distribution ("I should have started doing that years ago because it mea ...

Mock Tudor (album)
''Mock Tudor'' is the tenth studio album by Richard Thompson. Released in 1999, it was his final album released by Capitol Records and his last to date for a major record label. Subsequent Thompson studio albums would be self-financed and distributed by smaller independent labels. For this, his fifth album for Capitol, Thompson teamed up with producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, and ''Mock Tudor'' had a more straightforward production than his preceding albums on Capitol which had been produced by Mitchell Froom. In this album Thompson draws predominantly on the musical styles of 1960s England—the time and place of his youth. The lyrics have a nostalgic tinge and are rich with allusion to fairy tales and children's books as well as to Shakespeare and T. S. Eliot. Thematically, ''Mock Tudor'' is split into three sections: ''Metroland''—comprising the first five songs, "Cooksferry Queen" to "Hard on Me", ''Heroes In The Suburbs''—covering "Crawl Back (Under My Stone)" th ...

You? Me? Us?
''You? Me? Us?'' is the ninth studio album by British singer-songwriter Richard Thompson released in April 1996 via Capitol Records. Thompson's son Teddy from his first marriage (to Linda Thompson) Teddy sings backing vocals on disc 2. Music The album is split into two discs. Disc one, ''Voltage Enhanced'', is recorded with a band and is largely electric. Disc two, ''Nude'' is largely acoustic with just violin or Danny Thompson's double bass for accompaniment. Two songs, "Razor Dance" and "Hide It Away", are included on both discs. The songs on ''you? me? us?'' are notable for the metrical complexity and richness of lyrics and Thompson's guitar work. Mirror Blue
__NOTOC__ ''Mirror Blue'' is the eighth studio album by Richard Thompson, released in 1994. The follow-up to 1991's successful ''Rumor and Sigh'' was recorded in January 1993 with Mitchell Froom once again in the producer’s chair. Despite the increase in sales for his previous two albums, ''Mirror Blue'' was held back. The delay was partly due to changes at the top at Capitol Records which saw long time Thompson fan and supporter Hale Milgrim being replaced by Gary Gersh. When the album was eventually released it did not enjoy the record company support given to Thompson’s previous releases on Capitol. Critical response to the album was centered on the production, especially the unusual treatment of the drums. Thompson: "I thought it was a sort of deconstruction of the rock rhythm section... It was a radical record – and a brave record – it was off the back of the records Mitchell had done with Suzanne Vega and Los Lobos and the couple of records ngineerTchad Blake ...

Rumor And Sigh
''Rumor and Sigh'' is a 1991 album by British singer/songwriter Richard Thompson, his thirteenth album since leaving the band Fairport Convention in 1971. Released on the Capitol label, it was a commercial success for Thompson, featuring his biggest American hit single "I Feel So Good", as well as the fan favourite " 1952 Vincent Black Lightning”. The album earned Thompson a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1992. It was also voted number 665 in the third edition of Colin Larkin's ''All Time Top 1000 Albums'' (2000). Songs The American spelling of the word "Rumor" is due to Thompson taking the title from a posthumously published poem by Archibald MacLeish: "Rumor and sigh of unimagined seas/ Dim radiance of stars that never flamed." Patrick Humphries described the central character of the song "I Feel So Good" as a ne'er do well who has been freed from prison and expresses his "bullying exultation at his freedom. In an interview, Thompson ex ...

Amnesia (Richard Thompson Album)
''Amnesia'' is the sixth studio album by Richard Thompson, recorded and released in 1988. After the lackluster sales of '' Across a Crowded Room'' (1985) and '' Daring Adventures'' (1986), Polydor declined their option to renew their contract with Thompson. Thompson's then manager Gary Stamler negotiated a deal with Capitol Records and Thompson cut his first album for his new label in 1988. This was a good time for Thompson to be at Capitol: at the time the label was managed by Hale Milgrim, who was already a fan of Thompson and his work. Thus Capitol invested more money and effort into promoting Thompson than had been the case in the past and with other labels. Mitchell Froom was retained as producer, and the album was again recorded in Los Angeles with American session musicians providing most of the backing. Thompson still used British players to lend specifically British touches to some songs. In particular long-time collaborators John Kirkpatrick, Aly Bain and Philip Pi ...
