Richard O'Brien (author)
Richard O'Brien (January 13, 1934 – 2012) was an American humor writer and expert on toy collecting known primarily for his series of books, "O'Brien's Collecting Toys". His "Collecting American-Made Toy Soldiers," published in 1996, has been extensively used by hobbyists. Early life and education O'Brien was born in New York City. He attended Erasmus High and Brooklyn College, and served a brief stint in the United States Army. Career O'Brien worked as a press agent, publicizing clients including comedians Woody Allen, Bill Cosby, Joan Rivers, Victor Borge, Dick Cavett and Rodney Dangerfield. Writing gags for some of his clients led to him ghost authoring the Woody Allen comic strip, "Inside Woody Allen." From 1979 to 1981 he authored the nationally syndicated strip, "Koky," (Chicago Tribune-New York New Syndicate) illustrated by Mort Gerberg, a comic devoted to the life of a working mom. Woody Allen
Heywood "Woody" Allen (born Allan Stewart Konigsberg; November 30, 1935) is an American film director, writer, actor, and comedian whose career spans more than six decades and multiple Academy Award-winning films. He began his career writing material for television in the 1950s, mainly '' Your Show of Shows'' (1950–1954) working alongside Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Larry Gelbart, and Neil Simon. He also published several books featuring short stories and wrote humor pieces for ''The New Yorker''. In the early 1960s, he performed as a stand-up comedian in Greenwich Village alongside Lenny Bruce, Elaine May, Mike Nichols, and Joan Rivers. There he developed a monologue style (rather than traditional jokes) and the persona of an insecure, intellectual, fretful nebbish. Mort Gerberg is a multi-genre American cartoonist and author whose work has appeared in magazines, newspapers, books, online, home video, film and television. He is best known for his magazine cartoons, which have appeared in numerous and diverse titles such as ''The New Yorker'', ''Playboy'', ''Harvard Business Review'', ''The Huffington Post'' and Paul Krassner's ''The Realist'', and for his 1983 book, "Cartooning: The Art and The Business". He created a weekly news cartoon, ''Out of Line'', for ''Publishers Weekly'' from 1988 to 1994 and has drawn an editorial-page cartoon for ''The Columbia Paper'', the weekly newspaper in Columbia County, New York, since 2003. Besides magazine cartoons, Gerberg has drawn nationally syndicated newspaper comic strips. Barclay Manufacturing Company
The Barclay Manufacturing Company was an American metal toy company based in New Jersey that specialised in diecast toy cars and hollowcast toy soldiers. Due to their common availability at five and dime stores, collectors often refer to Barclay's toy soldiers as "Dimestore soldiers". History Barclay Manufacturing was formed by Leon Donze and Michael Levy in about 1922.. The name of the company came from Barclay Street in Hoboken, New Jersey. During the 1930s, the company was later based in North Bergen, New Jersey. In its heyday Barclay produced 500,000 toys a week, making them the largest toy soldier manufacturer at that time in the United States. In 1939 Barclay acquired another toy soldier company, Tommy Toy and its art deco sculptor Olive Kooken.
