Richard Griffiths
Richard Thomas Griffiths (31 July 1947 – 28 March 2013) was an English actor. He was known for his portrayals of Vernon Dursley in the ''Harry Potter'' films (2001–2011), Uncle Monty in '' Withnail and I'' (1987), and Henry Crabbe in '' Pie in the Sky'' (1994–1997). Over his career he received numerous accolades including a Tony Award and Olivier Award as well as a nomination for a BAFTA Award. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. For his performance in the stage play '' The History Boys'', Griffiths won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play and a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Play. For the 2006 film adaptation, Griffiths was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Richard Griffiths (1756–1826) was a Welsh industrial pioneer. Griffiths is notable for building the first recognised transport links into the Rhondda Valley paving the way for future coal exploration into one of the world's richest coal fields. Personal history Griffiths was a member of the Gellifendigaid family of Llanwonno; he was the third child, and second son to William Griffiths and Elizabeth (née Davies). He was christened on 13 January 1756, and was brought up in a very strong Methodist family.Lloyd (1958), pg 307. Griffiths practised medicine in CardiffEvans (1959), pg 40. but it was through his family connections that he began prospecting in mineral rights for which he became best known. Richard Griffiths (November 1827 – April 28, 1891) was a Welsh-born American labor union leader. Biography Born in November 1827, in Swansea, Griffiths was inspired by the writings of James Cook, and he ran away from home at the age of 14 to become a cabin boy. After several trips to the West Indies, Griffiths settled in the United States, where he enrolled in the United States Marine Corps. He served on the USS ''United States'' and was later promoted to sergeant. After leaving the marines, Griffiths settled in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, where he became a boot crimper. He moved to Milwaukee in 1864, and then to Chicago. He was a founder member of the Order of the Knights of St. Crispin, an early trade union, becoming its Deputy Grand Sir Knight in 1869. By 1871, the union was struggling, and Griffiths lost his job. He briefly moved to Detroit but soon returned to Chicago. Richard Thomas Griffiths (7 April 1948) is an English-Dutch historian who was professor of economic and social history at Leiden University. Early life Griffiths was born on 7 April 1948 in Isleworth, United Kingdom. He studied economic history and Russian studies at University College, Swansea and graduated with first class honours in 1970. He was a postgraduate student at Jesus College, Cambridge. In 1977 he received his PhD from the University of Cambridge with a thesis titled: "''Industrial retardation in the Netherlands 1830-1850''". Rick Griffiths (1948 – 13 December 2010) was an Australian Aboriginal activist and representative. He was the CEO of the Mindaribba Local Aboriginal Land Council and one of the final Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commissioners prior to the abolition of the commission. Background Griffiths was born in 1948 in the town of Curlewis, outside Gunnedah, New South Wales. He subsequently moved to the Hunter Region where he lived for the rest of his life. Griffiths was a passionate rugby league player, coach and administrator and was responsible for establishing coaching camps for young Aboriginal players. He also established an Aboriginal rugby league coaching clinic at the University of Newcastle, producing up to 60 Aboriginal coaches, with many going on to become prominent coaches in their own communities. Dick Griffiths
Robert Griffiths (28 September 1907 – 19 January 1976) sometimes incorrectly referred to as Dick or Richard Griffiths, was an Irish professional footballer who played as a winger in the Football League for Southport F.C. and Walsall, in the League of Ireland for Drumcondra and Shelbourne and once for the Irish Free State national team. Club career Griffiths made his debut for Walsall in a 3–2 defeat to York City in the Third Division North on 17 November 1934. In his second match two weeks later he scored as Walsall beat Accrington Stanley 6–0 at Fellows Park. He made only eight appearances in total for the club and scored one goal.
