Richard Burton (; born Richard Walter Jenkins Jr.; 10 November 1925 – 5 August 1984) was a Welsh actor. Noted for his mellifluous baritone voice, Burton established himself as a formidable Shakespearean actor in the 1950s and gave a memorable performance as Richard Burton's Hamlet, Hamlet in 1964. He was called "the natural successor to Laurence Olivier, Olivier" by critic Kenneth Tynan. Burton's perceived failure to live up to those expectations disappointed some critics and colleagues; his heavy drinking added to his reputation as a great performer who had wasted his talent. Nevertheless, he is widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation. Burton was nominated for an Academy Awards, Academy Award seven times but never won. Captain (British Army and Royal Marines), Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton, Order of St Michael and St George, KCMG, Royal Geographical Society#Fellowship, FRGS, (19 March 1821 – 20 October 1890) was a British explorer, army officer, orientalist writer and scholar. He was famed for his travels and explorations in Asia, Africa and South America, as well as his extensive knowledge of languages and cultures, speaking up to 29 different languages. Born in Torquay, Devon, Burton joined the Bombay Army as an officer in 1842, beginning an eighteen-year military career which included a brief stint in the Crimean War. He was subsequently engaged by the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) to explore the East African coast, where Burton along with John Hanning Speke led an expedition to discover the source of the Nile and became the first European known to have seen Lake Tanganyika. Richard Burton (11 October 1907 – 30 January 1974) was an English professional golfer. Burton, a former four-loom weaver at Cobden Mill, is mainly remembered for winning The Open Championship (British Open) in 1939, when it was played on the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland and holding the Open title for the longest time – from 1939 till after World War II. He played for Great Britain in the Ryder Cup in 1935, 1937, and 1949, and won two of his five matches. Early life Burton was born on a farm at Winter Hill in Darwen, Lancashire. The Burton family lived next to the Darwen Golf Club before moving to Lynwood Avenue. Richard was the youngest, but tallest, of three boys and with his brothers, Tom and John, used to watch members playing past their farm which was just above the clubhouse. Richard Leslie Burton (born 29 January 1955) is a former English cricketer. Burton was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He was born at Thealby, Lincolnshire. Despite having not played any form of minor counties cricket, Burton made his List A debut for Minor Counties North against Lancashire in the 1974 Benson & Hedges Cup, scoring 5 runs in the match before he was dismissed by Clive Lloyd. Two years later he made his debut for Lincolnshire against Staffordshire in the 1976 Minor Counties Championship. He played minor counties cricket for Lincolnshire to 1991, making 60 Minor Counties Championship appearances, the last of which came against Staffordshire. He also made ten MCCA Knockout Trophy appearances. At the time, Lincolnshire were also permitted to take part in the NatWest Trophy, whose matches held List A status.
