Richard Andrews (industrialist)
Richard Andrews (1798–1859) was an industrialist, philanthropist and politician in Southampton. Richard Andrews was born the son of a wheelwright at Bishop's Sutton. He founded his own coachbuilding business, with a manufacturing site in Above Bar. He was well-known and respected for his work for the city, and was elected mayor in 1849, for three consecutive years, and again in 1856. East (Andrews) Park in Southampton is named after him, and features his statue. The original statue, erected in 1860, was a much grander affair, but the limestone weathered poorly, and the pedestal was replaced in 1971. Richard Andrews (soldier)
Richard Andrews (1800-1835) was a Texian merchant and soldier who was the first killed in action casualty of the Texas Revolution during the Battle of Concepción on October 28, 1835. He is a folk hero (the "Nathan Hale of Texas") for his purported final words "I am a dead man, but don't let the other boys know it. Tell them to conquer or die." He is purportedly also the first wounded in action casualty of the war at the Battle of Gonzales on October 2, 1835. However, Samuel McCulloch Jr. is considered by some historians to be the first at the Battle of Goliad on October 10, 1835. Biography Andrews, an Indian fighter, joined the Texian army at the beginning of the Texas Revolution. Andrews was nicknamed "Big Dick" because of his large size and great strength. He was wounded in the Battle of Gonzales on October 2, 1835. He fought at the Battle of Concepción on October 28, 1835, where he was the only Texian killed in the battle. Richard Bullock Andrews (11 May 1823 – 26 June 1884) was an Australian politician and judge. Early life Richard Bullock Andrews was born in Epping, Essex, England the eldest child of Richard Bullock Andrews, an attorney, and his wife Emma Ann. From December 1839 Bullock worked in his father's solicitors business. On 15 August 1846 he married Elizabeth Holtaway (29 August 1818 – 15 February 1906), daughter of a solicitor. Andrews emigrated to South Australia, arriving there 14 December 1852 aboard the steamship ''Sydney''. In 1853 he was appointed a notary public, on 3 May 1853 he was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of South Australia. He practised in the Local Court at Mount Barker, South Australia and then set up an office in Adelaide.
