Ribulose
Ribulose is a ketopentose — a monosaccharide containing five carbon atoms, and including a ketone functional group. It has chemical formula . Two enantiomers are possible, -ribulose (-erythro-pentulose) and -ribulose (-erythro-pentulose). -Ribulose is the diastereomer of - xylulose. Ribulose sugars are composed in the pentose phosphate pathway from arabinose. They are important in the formation of many bioactive substances. For example, -ribulose is an intermediate in the fungal pathway for -arabitol production. Also, as the 1,5-bisphosphate, -ribulose combines with carbon dioxide at the start of the photosynthesis process in green plants (carbon dioxide trap). Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) is an organic substance that is involved in photosynthesis, notably as the principal acceptor in plants. It is a colourless anion, a double phosphate ester of the ketopentose (ketone-containing sugar with five carbon atoms) called ribulose. Salts of RuBP can be isolated, but its crucial biological function happens in solution. RuBP occurs not only in plants but in all domains of life, including Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya. The pentose phosphate pathway (also called the phosphogluconate pathway and the hexose monophosphate shunt or HMP shunt) is a metabolic pathway parallel to glycolysis. It generates NADPH and pentoses (five-carbon sugars) as well as ribose 5-phosphate, a precursor for the synthesis of nucleotides.
