Riba de Ave (also known as Riba d'Ave) is a Portuguese town located in the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão Vila Nova de Famalicão (), also known as Famalicão, is a Portuguese town in the Braga District and the sub-region of Ave (intermunicipal community), Vale do Ave. The population of ''Vila Nova'' was created in 1205 with the charter given by the K .... The population in 2011 was 3,425, in an area of 2.76 km². The town has existed since before Portugal became a country, although it has never been more than a tiny village in the Ave Valley. It's the only place in the region that has maintained its name since medieval times. The town only started to develop at the end of the 19th century when a textile industrial, Narciso Ferreira, settled there and created one of the first textile factories of the Ave Valley, Sampaio Ferreira. Vila Nova de Famalicão (), also known as Famalicão, is a Portuguese town in the Braga District and the sub-region of Ave (intermunicipal community), Vale do Ave. The population of ''Vila Nova'' was created in 1205 with the charter given by the King Sancho I of Portugal, Sancho I. The municipality was created in 1835 as a detachment from Barcelos and was elevated to the category of “Vila” with the charter given by the Queen Maria II of Portugal, D. Maria II. In 1985, approved by National Assembly, Vila Nova de Famalicão was elevated to the category of "city". The inhabitants of Famalicão are called ''Famalicenses''. Narciso Ferreira
Narciso Ferreira (7 July 1862 – 23 March 1933) was a Portuguese entrepreneur in the north of Portugal (Riba d’Ave, in Vila Nova de Famalição). He is considered the great founder of the textile industry in Portugal and responsible for the introduction of electric power supply in the North of the country. Biography He was the son of a farmers family. Since his father died when he was very young, his mother gave him a severe education. Seduced by the industrialization in the end of the 19th century, he was only nineteen years old when he set two looms in the farm house where they lived in Pedome. The production was sold in fairs and markets in the north of the country. Afterwards, he made friends with merchants an bankers and soon became very known and respected in the business world.
