Rhode GAA
Rhode GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located just outside the Village of Rhode in County Offaly, Ireland. With 30 Senior Football wins they are the most successful team in Offaly GAA football history. History The first recorded football match played by Rhode was on 17 March 1889 against Portarlington GAA. The outcome was a defeat for Rhode. The first appearance for Rhode in an Offaly football final was in 1891, however the match was unofficial and the facts about the match are unclear. Rhode's first official finals appearance was on 21 July 1900. It was also Rhode's first Championship win with the match ending Rhode 0−7, Daingean 0−2. Handball Fahy's Cross handball Club is located a mile north of Rhode, and is the Gaelic handball team of Rhode. The club, though small, has been successful over the years, with numerous Irish titles being won by Paddy Hope, David Hope and Nolie Murphy. Rhode, County Offaly
Rhode () is a village in County Offaly, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It is situated on the R400 road (Ireland), R400 at its junction with the R441 road (Ireland), R441 which leads to Edenderry, 12 km to the east. Rhode village is on an "island" of high ground surrounded by an expanse of raised bog which forms part of the Bog of Allen. History The Grand Canal (Ireland), Grand Canal, which was completed in the early 1800s, lies just south of the village, where it is crossed by Rhode Bridge (built c.1797). Several of the village's larger buildings, including Saint Peter's Roman Catholic church (original built 1816), date to the early 19th century. The modern village of Rhode expanded around a peat-burning power plant operated by the Electricity Supply Board which was supplied with mill (grinding), milled peat by Bord na Móna. Offaly Senior Football Championship
The Offaly Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by top-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly GAA, Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1896. Tullamore GAA, Tullamore are the title holders (2024), defeating Ferbane GAA, Ferbane on a scoreline of 0-15 to 0-14 in the final. Portarlington GAA
Portarlington GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) affiliated predominantly Gaelic football club with underage hurling up till U/17 level. The club is based in the town of Portarlington in County Laois, Ireland. McCann Park is the home of the Portarlington GAA club, it is named after club member Pat McCann. The Colm Maher memorial stand, which is the main stand in the ground, was built in the memory of Portarlington footballer Colm Maher who died in June 1996. The stand has a capacity of 1,012 people (all seated). McCann Park was used as the venue for the 1979 All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship final replay, where Offaly defeated Tipperary. Anton Sullivan
Anton Sullivan (born 1991/1992) is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Rhode and at senior level for the Offaly county team. Sullivan is a peacekeeper and has experienced service in the Lebanon. He was appointed as Offaly captain in 2018, shortly after returning to Ireland. Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Leinster Senior Club Football Championship
The Leinster Senior Club Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football tournament played on a knockout basis between the senior club championship winners of the competing counties in Leinster. The current holders of the Leinster title are Kilmacud Crokes from Dublin. Offaly side Gracefield were the first winners of the Leinster senior club football championship in the 1970–71 season. The most successful clubs are St. Vincent's, and Kilmacud Crokes from Dublin, and Portlaoise from Laois, who have won the Leinster championship on seven occasions. Carlow club Éire Óg won 5 championships in 7 years in the 1990s. Dublin clubs have won the Leinster championship twenty five times, which is more than triple any other county. 2017 Offaly Senior Football Championship
The 2017 Offaly Senior Football Championship was the 120th edition of Offaly GAA's premier Gaelic football competition for senior graded clubs in County Offaly, Ireland. Eight teams compete, with the winner representing Offaly in the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship. The championship starts a league stage and progresses to a knockout stage. Rhode were the defending champions after they defeated Ferbane in the previous years final.
