Rheingold (Grave Digger Album)
''Rheingold'' is the 11th studio album by German heavy metal band Grave Digger. It is a concept album based on Richard Wagner's ''The Ring of the Nibelung''. The album was released in 2003. Many lines of the lyrics are quoted or paraphrased from (an English translation of) Wagner. Grave Digger (band)
Grave Digger is a German heavy metal band that was first formed in 1980 by Chris Boltendahl and Peter Masson. Emerging from the 1980s German heavy/power/speed metal scene, they are considered part of the scene's "big four" alongside Helloween, Rage and Running Wild. Band history Early years and split (1980–1990) After various appearances at small festivals, the band recorded two songs for the compilation album ''Rock from Hell'' in 1983. A year later, Grave Digger, now comprising Chris Boltendahl (vocals), Peter Masson (guitar), Willi Lackmann (bass) and Albert Eckardt (drums), released their debut album '' Heavy Metal Breakdown''. The works are based loosely on characters from Germanic heroic legend, namely Norse legendary sagas and the . In Norse mythology, Valhalla ( , ; , )Orchard (1997:171–172) is described as a majestic hall located in Asgard and presided over by the god Odin. There were five possible realms the soul could travel to after death. The first was Fólkvangr, ruled by the goddess Freyja. The second was Hel, ruled by Hel, Loki's daughter. Wilhelm Richard Wagner ( ; ; 22 May 181313 February 1883) was a German composer, theatre director, essayist, and conductor who is chiefly known for his operas (or, as some of his mature works were later known, "music dramas"). A concept album is an album whose tracks hold a larger purpose or meaning collectively than they do individually. This is typically achieved through a single central narrative or theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, or lyrical.
