''Revels'' is a contemporary series of American seasonal stage performances, incorporating singing, dancing, recitals, and theatrics loosely organized around a central theme or narrative. The folk-tradition-based performances started in 1957, were restarted in 1971, and now occur in multiple cities around the US. History Performances were initially given at Christmas time as the ''Christmas Revels'' at Town Hall in New York City in 1957, which involved singing, dancing, recitals, theatrics (usually as brief skits, often humorous), and usually some audience participation, all appropriate to the holiday season. Performers were usually local, often non-professional, and frequently young. Revels (confectionery)
Revels are a chocolate coated confectionery with assorted centres made by Mars, Inc. They were first introduced into the United Kingdom in 1967. Originally, Revels had orange creme, coconut, toffee, or peanut centres, along with Galaxy Counters ( Minstrels minus exterior shell) and Maltesers. However, the coconut centres were later replaced with coffee creme, and the peanuts with raisins. Galaxy Counters Galaxy Counters were initially available as a product in their own right, but since their discontinuation they were only sold as part of the Revels selection. In 2010, however, Galaxy Counters were relaunched under the Galaxy brand. 2008 'eviction' In July 2008 Revels started a ''Big Brother''-style eviction campaign where one flavour from the bag would be replaced by a special limited edition flavour. Revels (Inns Of Court)
The revels were a traditional period of merrymaking and entertainment held at the Inns of Court, the professional associations, training centres and residences of barristers in London, England. The revels were held annually from the early 15th to the early 18th centuries and were an extension of a general nationwide period of entertainment running from All Saints' Eve (31 October) to Candlemas (2 February), though in some years they lasted as late as Lent. The inns elected a "prince" to lead the festivities and put on a sequence of elaborate entertainments and wild parties. The events included singing, dancing, feasting, the holding of mock trials and the performance of plays and masques. The revels played an important part in encouraging early English theatre and provided William Shakespeare with one of his most distinguished audiences in his early career. The Revels (also known as The Re-Vels and The Re-Vels Quartette) were an American doo-wop group formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1954. At first, the group bounced around different record labels earnings regional hits with tunes such as "Cha-Cha Toni" and "False Alarm", but national success initially eluded them. In 1959, however, the Revels charted at number 35 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 with "Midnight Stroll"—the act's only Top 40 hit. History In 1954, West Philadelphia High School students John Kelly ( lead vocalist), John Grant, John Jones, Henry Colclugh and Bill Jackson formed the vocal group, originally performing under the moniker the Re-Vels Quartette. ''Cynthia's Revels, or The Fountain of Self-Love'' is a late Elizabethan stage play, a satire written by Ben Jonson. The play was one element in the ''Poetomachia'' or War of the Theatres between Jonson and rival playwrights John Marston and Thomas Dekker. Performance The play was first performed in 1600 at the Blackfriars Theatre by the Children of the Chapel, one of the troupes of boy actors active in that era. The Children acted the play at the English Royal Court during the 1600/01 Christmas season – though it was not a success with the audience there. Publication The play was entered into the Stationers' Register on 23 May 1601, with the title ''Narcissus the Fountain of Self-Love.'' It was published in quarto later that year by the bookseller Walter Burre, under the title ''The Fountain of Self-Love, or Cynthia's Revels.'' The Master of the Revels was the holder of a position within the English, and later the British, royal household, heading the "Revels Office" or "Office of the Revels". The Master of the Revels was an executive officer under the Lord Chamberlain. Originally he was responsible for overseeing royal festivities, known as ''revels'', and he later also became responsible for stage censorship, until this function was transferred to the Lord Chamberlain in 1624. However, Henry Herbert, the deputy Master of the Revels and later the Master, continued to perform the function on behalf of the Lord Chamberlain until the English Civil War in 1642, when stage plays were prohibited.
