''Return to Earth 91–93'' is a compilation album by California stoner rock band Fu Manchu, released in 1998 on Elastic Records. The album is a collection of three early singles released in 1992, along with two bonus songs. The band features Scott Votaw on lead guitar before he was replaced by Eddie Glass on the debut album. This compilation has more of a gritty and punk edge to it than their later albums did. Fu Manchu (band)
Fu Manchu is an American stoner rock band formed in Orange County, California in 1985. The band underwent multiple lineup changes throughout the 80s and 90s, but has remained consistent since 2001. The band currently consists of founding guitarist turned lead vocalist Scott Hill, bassist Brad Davis, lead guitarist Bob Balch and drummer Scott Reeder. Fu Manchu have been long associated with the Palm Desert Scene, alongside bands such as Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss and Mondo Generator. ''Monster Riff'' has described the band as "one of the most loved and revered... bands in the stoner rock world." History Fu Manchu originally formed in 1985 as a hardcore punk band called Virulence. Stoner rock, also known as stoner metal or stoner doom, is a rock music fusion genre that combines elements of doom metal with psychedelic rock and acid rock. The genre emerged during the early 1990s and was pioneered foremost by Kyuss and Sleep. Characteristics Stoner rock is typically slow-to-mid tempo and features a heavily distorted, groove-laden bass-heavy sound, melodic vocals, and "retro" production. Due to the similarities between stoner and sludge metal, there is often a crossover between the two genres. This hybrid has traits of both styles, but generally lacks stoner metal's laid back atmosphere and its usage of psychedelia. Bands such as Weedeater, High on Fire and Electric Wizard creatively fuse both styles. ''The Action Is Go'' is the fourth studio album by American stoner rock band Fu Manchu. It features new drummer Brant Bjork ( Kyuss) and new lead guitarist Bob Balch, replacing Eddie Glass and Ruben Romano, who left to form the band Nebula. The album was produced by Jay Noel Yuenger of White Zombie, who contributed some additional instrumentation. The album sold 25,000 copies in the United States by May 2000. According to AllMusic, the new lineup provided Fu Manchu with "the impetus and inspiration to really start moving forward," and the resulting album demonstrates the band's "punk energy, classic rock drive, psychedelic crunch, and heavy-ass grind all at once." Edward Glass (born December 19, 1970) is an American rock musician best known as the frontman of the stoner rock band Nebula. Glass was formerly the drummer for the punk rock band Olivelawn, as well as a guitarist of Fu Manchu. Nebula has been Glass' primary musical group since 1997, when he and drummer Ruben Romano left Fu Manchu. ''No One Rides for Free'' is the debut album by the stoner rock band Fu Manchu. The album was produced by former Kyuss member Brant Bjork, who would eventually become Fu Manchu's drummer for a short tenure. It was the band's only album to feature bassist Mark Abshire. A twenty-year anniversary edition was released in 2014. Reception The ''Los Angeles Times'' noted that "a band can go far these days by recycling sounds from the biggest, dumbest mastodons of '70s arena rock." Dr. Fu Manchu ( zh, t=傅滿洲/福滿洲, p=Fú Mǎnzhōu) is a supervillain who was introduced in a series of novels by the English author Sax Rohmer beginning shortly before World War I and continuing for another forty years. The character featured in cinema, television, radio, comic strips and comic books for over 100 years, and he has also become an archetype of the evil criminal genius and mad scientist, while lending his name to the Fu Manchu moustache. Background and publication According to his own account, Sax Rohmer decided to start the Dr. Fu Manchu series after his Ouija board spelled out C-H-I-N-A-M-A-N when he asked what would make his fortune.
