''Return'' is a studio album by American jazz musician Jack DeJohnette. It was released in France via Newvelle Records label. ''Return'' is the label's second release and available in vinyl only by subscription only. Background ''Return'' is his first solo piano record in some 30 years (preceded by '' The Jack DeJohnette Piano Album''), hence the album title “Return”. The album contains 10 solo piano pieces, nine of them DeJohnette originals. "Ode to Satie" pays tribute to the short, atmospheric Gymnopedies composed by French pianist Erik Satie in the late 1800s. "Dervish Trance" takes its cue from the whirling dances of the Sufi tradition. "Lidya" is dedicated to DeJohnette's wife. The cover photo is from the portfolio of French travel photographer Bernard Plossu. The inner sleeve reproduces a poem by Pulitzer Prize-winner American poet and educator Tracy K. Smith. Jack DeJohnette (born August 9, 1942) is an American jazz drummer, pianist, and composer. Known for his extensive work as leader and sideman for musicians including Charles Lloyd (jazz musician), Charles Lloyd, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, John Abercrombie (guitarist), John Abercrombie, Alice Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock and John Scofield, DeJohnette was inducted into the ''Modern Drummer'' Hall of Fame in 2007. The company was founded by engineer and pianist Paolo Fazioli in 1981. As of 2016, craftsmen at Fazioli build 140 pianos a year. Milton Silva Campos do Nascimento (; born October 26, 1942), also known as Bituca, is a Brazilian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Fernando Rocha Brant (October 9, 1946 – June 12, 2015) was a Brazilian poet, lyricist and journalist, born in Caldas, Minas Gerais, Caldas, Minas Gerais. Brant's interest in music and literature began to increase while he studied law at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. At the beginning of the 1960s, Brant made friends with Milton Nascimento who soon became his creative partner and encouraged him to write his first lyrics, "Travessia". The song won the second place in the II Festival International da Canção (International Song Festival) in Rio de Janeiro in 1967. Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Bernard Plossu (born 1945) is a Vietnam-born French photographer. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Center for Creative Photography, both in Tucson, Arizona.
