The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is elected from single-member electorates called districts, returning 93 members since the 1999 election. Prior to 1927 some districts returned multiple members, including 1920-1927 when all districts returned three, four or five members. Parramatta is the only district to have continuously existed since the establishment of the Assembly in 1856. James McGirr
James McGirr (6 February 1890 – 27 October 1957) was an Australian politician. He served as premier of New South Wales from 1947 to 1952, holding office as leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). He led the party to victory at the 1947 and 1950 New South Wales state elections. He was a pharmacist by profession and the younger brother of Patrick and Greg McGirr, who were also members of parliament; Greg also led the ALP briefly but was never premier. Early life A Catholic, McGirr was the seventh son of John Patrick McGirr, farmer and Irish immigrant, and Mary McGirr, whose maiden name was O'Sullivan. Born in Parkes, New South Wales, he grew up on a dairy farm near that town. Educated mostly at St Stanislaus College, Bathurst, he was later apprenticed to his brother Greg McGirr, a pharmacist at Parkes. Bob Heffron
Robert James Heffron (10 September 189027 July 1978), also known as Bob Heffron or R. J. Heffron, was a long-serving New South Wales politician, union organiser and New South Wales Labor Party, AustralianLabor Party (ALP) Premier of New South Wales from 1959 to 1964. Born in New Zealand, Heffron became involved in various Socialist and labour movements in New Zealand and later Australia before joining the Australian Labor Party. A prominent unionist organiser, he was gaoled for "conspiracy to strike action". He was later elected to the Parliament of New South Wales for Electoral district of Botany, Botany in 1930. However his disputes with party leader Jack Lang (Australian politician), Jack Lang led to his expulsion from the ALP in 1936 and Heffron formed his own party from disgruntled Labor MPs known as the Industrial Labor Party. Electoral District Of Botany
Botany was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, originally created in 1894, partly replacing Redfern, and named after and including the Sydney suburb of Botany. In 1920, parts of the electoral districts of Botany, Alexandria, Enmore, Newtown and Redfern were combined to create a new incarnation of Botany, which elected five members by proportional representation. This was replaced by single member electorates, including parts of Botany, Alexandria, Enmore, Newtown and Redfern for the 1927 election. Botany was abolished in 1950, being partly replaced by Maroubra. Frank Browne (journalist)
Francis Courtney Browne (9 September 1915 – 14 December 1981) was an Australian journalist. In 1955 case, Browne was jailed by parliament for three months under the doctrine of parliamentary privilege. Life and career Frank Browne was born in the Sydney suburb of Coogee to New Zealand-born tailor Courtney Brown and Linda Veronica, ''née'' Heckenberg. He attended Christian Brothers' College in Waverley and went on to enter the Royal Military College, having failed to win a bursary for university. In August 1935 he was discharged and described as "temperamentally unsuited to the military profession"; Browne would later claim that he was in fact expelled as a result of an affair with an officer's wife. He also claimed (falsely) to have won a "gold pocket" for sporting excellence. Abe Landa
Abram Landa (10 November 1902 – 7 October 1989) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1930 until 1932 and from 1941 until 1965. He was variously a member of the Australian Labor Party (NSW) and the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch). He held a number of ministerial positions between 1953 and 1965. Early and personal life Landa was born in Belfast, Ireland and migrated to Sydney with his widowed mother in 1910. He was educated at Christian Brothers, Waverley and won a scholarship to study law at the University of Sydney. He practiced as a solicitor mainly in Industrial Law and joined the ALP in 1919. Ray Watson (judge)
Raymond Sanders "Ray" Watson (24 December 1922 – 26 October 2010) was an Australian judge of the Family Court of Australia, Family Court. He was one of the authors of the Family Law Act 1975, Family Law Act. He served aboard during the Second World War. In 1984 an attempt was made to kill him with a bomb. Early life Watson was born in Penrith, Sydney, to a road contractor, and received sporadic education. He worked for the New South Wales transport department in order to put himself through high school. He attended Penrith High School, and studied law at the University of Sydney – although his study was interrupted by service in the navy during World War II. He survived a kamikaze attack on in 1944. Frank Hill (Australian Politician)
Francis Hill (5 August 1883 – 11 July 1945) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1941 and his death. He was a member of the Labor Party. Early life Hill was born in Brisbane, Queensland and was the son of a contractor. His family moved to Sydney when he was young and he was educated to elementary level at the Sussex St Public School. He worked as a warehouseman and a foreman in a factory. A member of the ALP from an early age he became involved in local government and was elected as an alderman to the councils of the Cabramatta and Canley Vale Municipality, which is now part of the City of Fairfield. Hill was mayor between 1935 and 1945 and a member of the executive of the Local Government Association in 1945. He was also active in the establishment of community co-operative credit unions. Christopher Augustus "Gus" Kelly (21 August 1890 – 25 March 1967) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1925 to 1932 and again from 1935 until his death in 1967, representing the electorate of Bathurst. He held numerous ministerial positions between 1941 and 1965 in McKell Labor Government.
