1941 New South Wales State Election
The 1941 New South Wales state election was held on 10 May 1941. This election was for all of the 90 seats in the 33rd New South Wales Legislative Assembly and was conducted in single-member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting. Background The replacement of Jack Lang by William McKell as leader of the Labor Party in 1939 reunited and rejuvenated the party. A small number of Labor party members continued to support the far-left-wing State Labor Party (Hughes-Evans) but that had minimal impact on the election results. The Labor Party moved away from Lang's populist, inflationary policies, which were seen as extremist by many voters in the middle ground of the political spectrum. McKell also improved the party's standing in rural electorates by personally selecting well-known local candidates. Bob Heffron
Robert James Heffron (10 September 189027 July 1978), also known as Bob Heffron or R. J. Heffron, was a long-serving New South Wales politician, union organiser and Labor Party Premier of New South Wales from 1959 to 1964. Born in New Zealand, Heffron became involved in various Socialist and labour movements in New Zealand and later Australia before joining the Australian Labor Party. Being a prominent unionist organiser, having been gaoled at one stage for "conspiracy to strike action", he was eventually elected to the Parliament of New South Wales for Botany in 1930. However his disputes with party leader Jack Lang led to his expulsion from the ALP in 1936 and Heffron formed his own party from disgruntled Labor MPs known as the Industrial Labor Party. Botany was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, originally created in 1894, partly replacing Redfern, and named after and including the Sydney suburb of Botany. In 1920, parts of the electoral districts of Botany, Alexandria, Enmore, Newtown and Redfern were combined to create a new incarnation of Botany, which elected five members by proportional representation. This was replaced by single member electorates, including parts of Botany, Alexandria, Enmore, Newtown and Redfern for the 1927 election. Norman Thomas (Australian Politician)
Norman Thomas (born 14 March 1894, date of death unknown) was an Australian politician. He was born at Byrock to grazier Charles Edward Thomas and Mary Jane, ''née'' Patterson. He attended public schools at Narromine, Parramatta and Kensington before studying at Stott and Hoare's Business College. He worked various jobs including a jackeroo at Trangie, a station overseer at Walgett, and a sheep farmer. From 1916 to 1919 he served in the Australian Flying Corps as an air mechanic. On 8 March 1924 he married Josephine Fagan, with whom he had three daughters. Thomas moved to Bondi around 1930 as an investor and property owner. Abe Landa
Abram Landa (10 November 1902 – 7 October 1989) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1930 until 1932 and from 1941 until 1965. He was variously a member of the Australian Labor Party (NSW) and the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch). He held a number of ministerial positions between 1953 and 1965. Early and personal life Landa was born in Belfast, Ireland and migrated to Sydney with his widowed mother in 1910. He was educated at Christian Brothers, Waverley and won a scholarship to study law at the University of Sydney. He practiced as a solicitor mainly in Industrial Law and joined the ALP in 1919. Francis Hill (5 August 1883 – 11 July 1945) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1941 and his death. He was a member of the Labor Party. Early life Hill was born in Brisbane, Queensland and was the son of a contractor. His family moved to Sydney when he was young and he was educated to elementary level at the Sussex St Public School. He worked as a warehouseman and a foreman in a factory. A member of the ALP from an early age he became involved in local government and was elected as an alderman to the councils of the Cabramatta and Canley Vale Municipality, which is now part of the City of Fairfield. Christopher Augustus "Gus" Kelly (21 August 1890 – 25 March 1967) was an Australian politician.
