The family name Regan, along with its cognates O'Regan, O Regan, Reagan, and O'Reagan, is an Anglicized form of the Irish surname Ó Riagáin or Ó Ríogáin, from Ua Riagáin. The meaning is likely to have originated in ancient Gaelic ''ri'' "sovereign, king" and the diminutive suffix ''-in''; thus "the king's child" or "big king". The name was borne by two distinct families: one seated in Meath, the other in Thomond. The O'Regans of Meath were a branch of the southern Ui Neill and one of the four Tribes of Tara. Before the Anglo-Norman invasion, they were lords of south Breagh and the north of present-day County Dublin. They took a leading part in the wars against the Danes. Regan is a city in Burleigh County, North Dakota, United States. Its population was 35 at the 2020 census. Regan was founded in 1912. History Regan was established after the Northern Pacific Railway built a line through the area in 1912. The settlement was named for J. Austin Regan, a land company official who had platted the townsite in 1911. A post office and a church opened in 1912, and a newspaper, ''The Regan Headlight'', was established in 1913. The Regan School opened in 1914 in a building previously used as a barbershop. The early town had two banks, a lumber yard, a blacksmith shop, a butcher shop, and a hotel. A telephone company was established in 1915, and Regan was incorporated as a village in 1916. An automobile garage opened in 1917. Mount Regan, rises above sea level, and is a peak in the Sawtooth Range of Idaho. The peak is located in the Sawtooth Wilderness of Sawtooth National Recreation Area on the border of Boise and Custer counties. The peak is located west of Merritt Peak, its line parent. The peak is named after Timothy Regan, a pioneer who lived in Silver City, and then Boise. Mount Regan is located at the southern end of Sawtooth Lake. The Trailer Lakes and Regan Lake are located northwest of the peak, and the Trail Creek Lakes are west of the peak.
