Red Smith (American Football)
Frank D. "Red" Smith was a college football player. Early years He attended preparatory school at Mooney School in Franklin, Tennessee along with Ed Hamilton and Frank Kyle. Cumberland Smith was a prominent center for the Cumberland Bulldogs of Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee, inducted into the Cumberland Sports Hall of Fame in 1978. Cumberland coach A. L. Phillips said Smith was the "only man he ever saw who has reduced football to a science." In 1915, John Heisman selected the 30 greatest Southern football players, and mentioned Smith seventh. 1903 At Cumberland he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, praised for his athleticism along with M. Center or centre (C) is a position in American football. The center is the innermost Lineman (American football), lineman of the offensive line on a football team's Offense (sports), offense who passes (or "Snap (gridiron football), snaps") the ball between his legs to the quarterback at the start of each Play from scrimmage, play. Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and typically line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and so back up the defensive linemen. They play closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary).
