Red Deer (N.W.T. Electoral District)
Red Deer was a territorial electoral district that was mandated to return a single member to the North-West Legislative Assembly from 1888 until 1902. Geography The electoral district was named for Red Deer, a community which was incorporated as a village in 1894 and town in 1901. Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) Red Deer's first representative was physician Robert Brett. There were no official parties in these early assemblies, but Brett aligned himself with the North-West Territories Liberal Party when the Dominion party lines were introduced in 1898. In the 1891 election, Brett contested the Banff electoral district and Francis Wilkins was acclaimed as the member for Red Deer. In the 1894 election, Wilkins came in third to the elected John A. 1888 North-West Territories General Election
The 1888 North-West Territories general election elected members of the 2nd Legislative Council of the North-West Territories. The 2nd Legislative Council of the North-West Territories replaced the 1st Council of the North-West Territories. The 2nd Legislative Council of the North-West Territories was replaced by the 1st North-West Assembly in 1891 when the quota of elected members was reached. (A different 2nd Council of the Northwest Territories (1905–1951) was created in 1905, when the NWT lost most of its population, to differentiate the new one from the two legislative councils of the NWT that had existed 1876 to 1891.) 1894 North-West Territories General Election
The 1894 North-West Territories general election was held on 31 October 1894. This was the third general election in the History of the Northwest Territories, history of the North-West Territories, Canada. It was held to elect 29 members of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories, the writs were dropped on 3 October 1894. Frederick W. A. G. Haultain, Frederick Haultain continued to lead the government. This was the first general election a secret ballot was held, with voters marking an X on a blank piece of paper in the colour that corresponds to their candidate. Canadian Provincial Electoral Districts
Canadian provincial electoral districts have boundaries that are non- coterminous with those of the federal electoral districts, except for districts in the province of Ontario, where districts in the Southern Ontario region are coterminous while those in Northern Ontario are not. Leonard Gaetz
Leonard Gaetz (June 7, 1841 – June 9, 1907) was a Canadian politician. He was one of the first settlers and founder of what is now the city of Red Deer, Alberta. Early life Born in 1841 at Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia, Gaetz married Caroline Blowers Hamilton in 1865. They had a family of eleven children, six sons and five daughters. Gaetz was an ordained Methodist minister, serving the church until 1883. He left the ministry due to ill health and moved to the Red Deer Valley. He decided to homestead on the west half of a section on the Red Deer River, and one of his sons, Halley Gaetz, took up the other half section. Red Deer Leonard Gaetz acted as the local land agent for the Saskatchewan Colonization Company and purchased parts of three other sections from his employers. The North-West Territories Liberal Party was a short-lived branch of the Liberal Party of Canada in the North-West Territories. History The party existed between 1898 and 1905. In 1905, the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan were created from the heavily populated areas of the North-West Territories. The members of the NWT Liberal Party joined the Alberta Liberal Party or the Saskatchewan Liberal Party. The 3rd North-West Legislative Assembly was constituted after the 1894 North-West Territories general election which took place on October 31, 1984. It lasted from 1894 to 1898. Several important developments happened during this Assembly. 1898 North-West Territories General Election
The 1898 North-West Territories general election took place on 4 November 1898. This was the fourth general election in the history of the North-West Territories, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories. Frederick W. A. G. Haultain was still the first premier of the North-West Territories (NWT). That title was given by legislation passed in 1897. He was the last premier of the NWT until 1980. There were three big issues in this election, the first being acquiring provincial rights and how to divide the NWT into provinces. The second issue was the transfer of education from the federal to the territorial level. This was Haultain's personal project. Unfortunately for the NWT, that power was not turned over until 1970. Francis Edward Wilkins (1864 in St. Louis, Missouri – March 10, 1908 in Lacombe, Alberta) was a politician in Northwest Territories, Canada. Francis moved with his family to a homestead near Red Deer in 1890. Francis was acclaimed to the Legislative Assembly of Northwest Territories in the 1891 Northwest Territories general election after Robert Brett the incumbent decided to run in the new Banff riding.
