Recognition Of Same-sex Unions In The Australian Capital Territory
Same-sex marriage has been legal in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and in the rest of Australia, since 9 December 2017 following passage in the Parliament of the '' Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Act 2017''. The ACT is unique in being the only state or territory in Australia to have independently passed a same-sex marriage law. In October 2013, the Legislative Assembly approved the '' Marriage Equality (Same Sex) Act 2013''. The Abbott government immediately challenged the law in the High Court of Australia. The court struck down the legislation on 12 December 2013, determining that marriage is an exclusive power of the Commonwealth and no state or territory law creating any other type of marriage could operate concurrently with the '' Marriage Act 1961''. John Howard
John Winston Howard (born 26 July 1939) is an Australian former politician who served as the 25th prime minister of Australia from 1996 to 2007. He held office as leader of the Liberal Party of Australia. His eleven-year tenure as prime minister is the second-longest in Australian history, behind only Sir Robert Menzies. Howard has also been the oldest living Australian former prime minister since the death of Bob Hawke in May 2019. Howard was born in Sydney and studied law at the University of Sydney. Rudd Government (2007–2010)
The first Rudd government was the executive Government of Australia formed by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and led by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Simon Corbell (born 21 November 1970) is a former Australian politician and Deputy Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory. He was also Attorney-General, Minister for Health, Minister for the Environment and Minister for the Capital Metro. Early life Corbell grew up in Weston Creek. Michael Jeffery
Major General Philip Michael Jeffery, (12 December 1937 – 18 December 2020) was a senior Australian Army officer and vice-regal representative. He was the 28th governor of Western Australia from 1993 to 2000, and the 24th governor-general of Australia, serving from 2003 to 2008. From Perth, Western Australia, Jeffery graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, and served in the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War, being awarded the Military Cross during the latter conflict.
