Realty Building Explosion
On May 28, 2024, a large and powerful explosion destroyed most of the first floor of the Realty Building in the downtown district of Youngstown, Ohio, US, and severely damaged the floors above it, killing one bank employee and injuring seven. The explosion was suspected to have been caused by a natural gas leak, although the official cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Background The Realty Building was constructed in 1924 for the Realty Guarantee and Trust Company, and was designed by architect Morris W. Scheibel. In 1955, gale-force winds severely damaged and tore the roof off of the building, requiring $50,000 to repair. In 2009, the building was renovated into a 23-unit apartment complex. 2014 East Harlem Gas Explosion
On March 12, 2014, an explosion occurred at 9:31 a.m. in the East Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, United States. The explosion leveled two apartment buildings located just north of 116th Street (Manhattan), 116th Street at 1644 and 1646 Park Avenue, killing eight people, injuring at least 70 others, and displacing 100 families. City officials initially pointed to a gas leak as the cause of the blast. In June 2015, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) blamed the explosion on failures by Consolidated Edison and the city. 2019 Durham Gas Explosion
On April 10, 2019, a gas explosion occurred near downtown Durham, North Carolina at the 115 block of North Duke Street in the Brightleaf District. The blast destroyed several buildings and damaged dozens of others, killing two people and injuring 25 others, including 9 firefighters. City officials cited a gas leak as the cause of the explosion. On June 22, 2020, four lawsuits were filed in relation to the explosion. Each lawsuit represented separate victims of the blast, including one of the two deceased. 2025 Taichung Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Gas Explosion
On 13 February 2025, a gas explosion occurred at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store in the Xitun District of Taichung, Taiwan. Five people were killed, including three tourists from Macau who were struck by debris, and 38 were injured, making it the deadliest incident in the history of Taiwanese department stores. Investigations are underway as of 2025, but according to the Taichung District Prosecutors Office ( zh) and Fire Bureau of the Taichung City Government ( zh), the gas explosion was the result of an improper cut of natural gas pipelines during renovation, thus believed that the incident was a gas explosion.
