Ravenswood, Tasmania
Ravenswood is an eastern suburb of Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. History Ravenswood was first settled in the early nineteenth century as a small farming area. The first official valuation of properties in the district took place in 1858. For some years after the arrival of the pioneers, there was only one road to Launceston across a ford at St. Leonards. There were no bridges. The farmers went by horseback to Launceston to sell their fruit, butter, eggs and vegetables. There is very little about the area indexed at the Archives Office in Tasmania, but what information there is supports the claim that the Ravenswood district took its name from the property owned by David McGown on Distillery Creek. As well as already obtaining grants of land from the Government, Mr McGown purchased 2000 acres and another 30 acres at Distillery Creek from Henry Prialux, the original grantee, in February, 1836, for the sum of two thousand pounds. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The school and residence are components of an educational facility that has served Ravenswood since 1873. The existing early building at Ravenswood School is an 1880s extension of the original school built in 1873 and the residence dates from 1873 with extensions made over the years to accommodate changing needs. Gold was discovered at Ravenswood in 1868, a few years after pastoral settlement of the area had begun. A tent settlement quickly sprang up and was surveyed in 1870 and gazetted as a town in 1871. Nailsea
Nailsea is a town in Somerset, England, southwest of Bristol, and northeast of Weston-super-Mare. The nearest village is Backwell, which lies south of Nailsea on the opposite side of the Bristol to Exeter railway line. Nailsea had a population of 15,630 in the 2011 Census. The town was an industrial centre based on coal mining and glass manufacture, which have now been replaced by service industries. Old Ravenswood School, also known as "1887 School," was a historic school building located at Ravenswood, Jackson County, West Virginia. It was built in 1887–1888, and was a two-story brick building with an irregular hipped roof with a truncated tower that, until 1971, supported a belfry. The school closed in 1968.
