Rastus Among The Zulus
''Rastus Among the Zulus'' is an extant short comedy film produced by the Lubin Manufacturing Company. It depicts an African American falling asleep and being "shanghaied" before being shipwrecked and captured by Zulus. As he is prepared to be cooked in a pot he is asked if he will choose to marry the chief's daughter in order to save his life. He chooses the pot, then wakes up back on the wharf to find himself being clubbed by a policeman. An advertisement for a split reel of Sigmund Lubin's '' A Widow's Wiles'' and this film survives. In 2009 the film was released with three other early American short films on a DVD titled ''Visions of Africa''. The film was one of several film, vaudeville, and circus acts that depicted Zulus to the American public. Lubin also made the 1914 film ''Rastus Knew it Wasn't''. As a comedy, it was a parody of D. Lubin Manufacturing Company
The Lubin Manufacturing Company was an American motion picture production company that produced silent films from 1896 to 1916. Lubin films were distributed with a Liberty Bell trademark. * * History The Lubin Manufacturing Company was formed in 1902 and corporation, incorporated in 1909 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Siegmund Lubin. The company was the offspring of Lubin's film equipment and film distribution and production business, which began in 1896. Siegmund Lubin, a Jewish immigrant from Poland, was originally an optical and photography expert in Philadelphia but became intrigued with Thomas Edison, Thomas Edison's motion picture camera and saw the potential in selling similar equipment as well as in making films. Known as "Pop" Lubin, he constructed his own combined camera/projector he called a "Cineograph" and his lower price and marketing know-how brought reasonable success. Sigmund Lubin
Siegmund Lubin (born Zygmunt Lubszyński, April 20, 1851 – September 11, 1923) was an American motion picture pioneer who founded the Lubin Manufacturing Company (1902–1917) of Philadelphia. Biography Siegmund Lubin was born as Zygmunt Lubszyński, a son of Samuel Lubszyński and Rebeka Lubszyńska, Polish Jews, in Breslau, Kingdom of Prussia (now Wrocław, Poland) or in Poznań, Kingdom of Prussia on April 20, 1851. His father, a successful ophthalmologist, moved the family for economic reasons to Berlin soon after Zygmunt's birth. There young Zygmunt Germanicized the spelling of his first name to ''Siegmund''. He later graduated from the Heidelberg University and in 1876 emigrated to the United States, where he settled in Philadelphia and worked as an optometrist. Around 1881, he shortened his surname from the Polish Lubszyński to Lubin. He soon progressed to making his own camera and projector combination, which he sold.
