Ranaghat Junction Railway Station
Ranaghat is a Kolkata Suburban Railway junction station on the Sealdah–Ranaghat line, the Lalgola branch line, the Lalgola and Gede branch lines, Gede branch line and the Ranaghat–Bangaon link line. It is located in Nadia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It serves Ranaghat and the surrounding areas. History The Calcutta (Sealdah)–Kusthia line of Eastern Bengal Railway was opened to traffic in 1862. Eastern Bengal Railway worked on the eastern side of the Hooghly River, which in those days was unbridged. The Ranaghat–Bangaon link was constructed in 1882–84 by the Bengal Central Railway Company The Ranaghat–Lalgola branch line was opened in 1905. Sealdah Railway Division
Sealdah railway division is one of the four railway divisions under the jurisdiction of Eastern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. Its headquarters is located in Kaiser Street in Kolkata, West Bengal near the Sealdah railway station. Geographically the division covers the railway tracks and services in the areas between the Hooghly river on the west, Bangladesh on the north and east and the Sundarbans in the south. The Railway network under Sealdah Division was part of the Eastern Bengal Railway (present-day Bangladesh Railway). The Eastern Bengal Railway was formed on 1 July 1884. On 1 January 1942, Assam Bengal Railway (present-day Northeast Frontier Railway) and Eastern Bengal Railway were amalgamated to form Bengal Assam Railway. Hooghly River
The Hooghly River (, also spelled ''Hoogli'' or ''Hugli'') is the westernmost distributary of the Ganges, situated in West Bengal, India. It is known in its upper reaches as the Bhagirathi. The Bhagirathi splits off from the main branch of the Ganges at Giria, India, Giria. A short distance west, it meets the man-made Farakka Feeder Canal, which massively increases its flow. The river then flows south to join the Jalangi River, Jalangi at Nabadwip, where it becomes the Hooghly proper. The Hooghly continues southwards, passing through the metropolis of Kolkata. Lalgola And Gede Branch Lines
Lalgola is a census town in the Lalgola CD block in the Lalbag subdivision of Murshidabad district, West Bengal. It is situated about north of Kolkata, near the head of the Ganges delta. It is a terminal railway station on the Ranaghat-Lalgola branch line. The distance between Lalgola railway station and Krishnapur railway station is one of the shortest distance between two railway stations in India (1.7 km). It is also a border checkpoint but presently non functional. Backdrop Lalgola is a trading hub situated near Bangladesh-India border surrounded by a number of large and small lakes (''dighis''). It was a settlement which came into existence after the Permanent Settlement in Bengal in 1793 by the Zamindar employed by the British East India Company.
