Ralph Earle II (September 26, 1928 - January 13, 2020) was an American diplomat and arms control negotiator. He was a key architect of several major international arms control accords. He served as the United States' chief negotiator at the SALT II round of talks on nuclear disarmament from 1978 to 1979, as director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (ACDA) between 1980 and 1981 and as deputy director at the ACDA from 1994 to 1999. Early life and education Earle was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, on September 26, 1928. He was the son of the former Governor of Pennsylvania, George H. Earle III and Huberta Potter Earle Sheaffer. He attended Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania and graduated from Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts in 1946. Ralph Earle (May 3, 1874 – February 13, 1939) was an American Navy officer and university president. He served the United States Navy during the Spanish–American War and World War I. He was the Chief, Bureau of Ordnance (BUORD) and retired as a rear admiral in 1927. He was also president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute from 1925 to 1939. Ralph Anstruther Earle (1835 – 10 June 1879) was a British Conservative Party politician. Early career He came from a well-known Liverpool slave-trading family with a Whig background, and was educated at Harrow, before joining the British Foreign Service. While working as an attaché at the embassy in Paris, from 1857 he supplied Benjamin Disraeli, who was leading the opposition in the House of Commons, with secret diplomatic information to use against the government of Lord Palmerston. Political activity Probably hoping Disraeli would become Foreign Secretary on a change of government, he became the politician's private secretary. Disraeli in fact became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1858, and Earle served as his secretary for eight years. Ralph Earl (May 11, 1751August 16, 1801) was an American artist known for his landscape paintings and numerous portraits. Early life Ralph Earl was born on May 11, 1751, in either Shrewsbury or Leicester, Massachusetts, the oldest of four children of Ralph Earle and Phebe Whittemore Earl. By 1774, he was working in New Haven, Connecticut, as a portrait painter. In the autumn of 1774, Earl returned to Leicester, Massachusetts, to marry his cousin, Sarah Gates. A few months later, their daughter Phebe was born in January 1775. Earl left them both with Sarah's parents and returned to New Haven to continue painting portraits. Earl's wife and daughter joined him in New Haven in November 1776, and they lived there until May 1777, when their son, John, was born. Sarah later attested that this six-month period "was all the time we kept house together."
