Ralph De Ashton
Sir Ralph de Ashton or Assheton ( fl. 1421–1486), was an officer of state under Edward IV of England. Early life Ashton was the half-brother of Sir Thomas de Ashton ('' fl.'' 1446) the alchemist, and the son of the Sir John de Ashton mentioned by Froissart. His mother was Margaret, daughter of Sir John Byron of Clayton. In his seventeenth year, he was one of the pages of honour to Henry VI, and at the same early age, he married Margaret, the heiress of the Bartons of Middleton, and became the founder of the family that held the lordship there until the 18th century, when it passed by the female line to the holders of the Suffield peerage. His grandson Richard Ashton rebuilt St Leonard's church at Middleton in 1524. Offices Ralph Ashton was a man of influence, and in the reign of Edward IV he held various offices. Liverpool was a borough United Kingdom constituencies, constituency in the county of Lancashire of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons for the Parliament of England to 1706 then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1885. It was represented by two Members of Parliament (MPs). In 1868, this was increased to three Members of Parliament. The borough franchise was held by the Freedom of the City, freemen of the borough. Each elector had as many votes as there were seats to be filled. Votes had to be cast by a spoken declaration, in public, at the hustings. In 1800 there were around 3000 electors, with elections in this seat being nearly always contested. Ralph Assheton (general)
Ralph Assheton (1596 – 17 February 1650) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1640 to 1649. He was a general in the Parliamentary army in the English Civil War. Assheton was eldest son of Sir Richard Assheton of Middleton (who died 1618) and a descendant of Ralph de Ashton of Middleton. He was admitted at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge on 22 May 1614 and was also admitted at Gray's Inn on 24 May 1614. He was awarded MA at Cambridge in 1615 on the visit of the King, and was incorporated at Oxford University in 1616. In November 1640, Assheton was elected MP for Lancashire in the Long Parliament. He was an energetic supporter of parliament and the avowed leader of the Presbyterian party in Lancashire. In the Civil War he became a colonel-general in the parliamentary army and was commander in chief of the parliamentary forces in Lancashire. He was excluded from parliament in 1648. Sir Ralph Assheton, 2nd Baronet, of Lever (ca. 160530 January 1680) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1625 and 1680. Assheton was the son of Sir Ralph Assheton, 1st Baronet of Lever, Lancashire and his wife Dorothy Bellingham, daughter of Sir James Bellingham of Levens, Westmorland. He matriculated from Magdalene College, Cambridge at Easter 1623. He was admitted at Gray's Inn on 7 May 1624. He was elected Member of Parliament for Clitheroe in 1625 and was re-elected in 1626. He was appointed Sheriff of Lancashire for 1633. In April 1640, Assheton was elected MP for Clitheroe in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected in November 1640 as MP for Clitheroe in the Long Parliament. He succeeded his father to the Assheton baronetcy on 18 October 1644 and to the family's Downham estate near Clitheroe. Ralph Assheton (1830–1907) was an English politician. Biography Early life Ralph Assheton was born on 20 December 1830. His father was William Assheton (1788–1853) and his mother, Hon. Frances Annabella Cokayne (1795–1835). His maternal great-grandfather was Charles Cokayne, 5th Viscount Cullen (1710–1802). He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, where he received a Masters of Arts degree. Career He was elected as Member of Parliament for Clitheroe at an unopposed by-election in 1868 following the death of Richard Fort. He held the seat at the subsequent 1868 general election, and also in 1874, but was defeated at the 1880 general election. He did not stand for Parliament again. Sir Ralph Cockayne Assheton, 1st Baronet, (13 September 1860 – 21 September 1955), was an English public official. Early life Ralph Cockayne Assheton was born in 1860 in Downham, Lancashire. Ralph Assheton, 1st Baron Clitheroe, (24 February 1901 – 18 September 1984), was an English aristocrat and politician. Biography Assheton was born on 24 February 1901. His father was Sir Ralph Assheton, 1st Baronet (1860–1955), and his mother, Mildred Estelle Sybella Master (1884–1949). He was educated at Summer Fields School and Eton College. Assheton was Member of Parliament (MP) for Rushcliffe from 1934 to 1945, for the City of London from 1945 to 1950, and for Blackburn West from 1950 to 1955. In the wartime government under Winston Churchill, he was Minister of Supply in 1942, and Financial Secretary to the Treasury from 1942 to 1944.
