Railway Roundhouse
A railway roundhouse is a building with a circular or semicircular shape used by rail transport, railways for servicing and storing locomotives. Traditionally, though not always the case today, these buildings contained or were adjacent to a Railway turntable, turntable. Overview Early steam locomotives normally traveled forwards only. Although reverse operations capabilities were soon built into locomotive mechanisms, the controls were normally optimized for forward travel, and the locomotives often could not operate as well in reverse. Engine-house
A motive power depot (MPD) or locomotive depot, or traction maintenance depot (TMD), is where locomotives are usually housed, repaired and maintained. They were originally known as "running sheds", "engine sheds" or just "sheds". Facilities are provided for refuelling and the replenishing of water, lubricating oil and grease and, for steam engines, the disposal of ash. The Valley Heights Rail Museum is a railway museum located in Valley Heights, New South Wales, Australia. The facility is located north-west of Valley Heights railway station. Roundhouse (venue)
The Roundhouse is a performing arts and concert venue at the Grade II* listed former Railway roundhouse, railway engine shed in Chalk Farm, London, England. The building was erected in 1846–1847 by the London & North Western Railway as a Railway roundhouse, roundhouse, a circular building containing a railway turntable, but was used for that purpose for only about a decade. After being used as a warehouse for a number of years, the building fell into disuse just before World War II. It was first made a listed building in 1954. It reopened after 25 years, in 1964, as a performing arts venue, when the playwright Arnold Wesker established the Centre 42 Theatre Company and adapted the building as a theatre.
