The Railway Stakes is an Australian Group races, Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race under Handicap (horse racing), handicap race conditions over a distance of 1600 metres at Ascot Racecourse, Western Australia, Ascot Racecourse in Perth in late November. Prizemoney is A$1,500,000. History The inaugural running of the event was held on Perth Cup day in 1887 with stakes of 60 Sovereign (British coin), sovereigns when the three-year-old Nimrod won the event over Hermit. The following season the race was held on New Year's Day 1889 and in the renewal of the race Hermit won the race while Nimrod finished third. The event continued to be part of the Western Australian Turf Club's Summer Carnival with the race being scheduled on the same day as the Perth Cup. Carbine (1885–1914) was a champion New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who won 30 principal races in New Zealand and Australia. He was very popular with racing fans, and sporting commentators of the day praised him for his gameness, versatility, stamina and weight-carrying ability, as well as for his speed. He was one of five inaugural inductees into both the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame and the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Northerly (17 October 1996 – 9 May 2012) was an Australian racehorse who is considered arguably Australia's best middle distance Thoroughbred horse of the early 2000s.
