Rail Transport In Sierra Leone
There are 84 kilometres of railway in Sierra Leone, all of which is private and of a narrow gauge, . Network Sierra Leone no longer has any common-carrier railways, as the gauge Sierra Leone Government Railway from Freetown through Bo to Kenema and Daru with a branch to Makeni closed in 1975. The country does not share rail links with adjacent countries, Guinea and Liberia. The existing railway between the port of Pepel and the Marampa iron ore mine is being refurbished by African Minerals plc. This is a common-carrier railway, but will be used predominantly for transporting iron ore. Tagrin Point
Tagrin Point is the proposed location of a deep water port to replace the older and shallower port of Port Pepel in Sierra Leone. It would be connected to existing and new iron ore mined by an upgraded railway line converted to standard gauge. Ferry Tagrin lies on the opposite or northern side of the harbour to the capital of Freetown. There is a ferry from Kissy to Tagrin Point. Tonkolili
Tonkolili District is a district in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. Its capital and largest city is Magburaka. The other major towns include Masingbi, Yele, Mile 91, Bumbuna, Yonibana, Matotoka. Mathora, Magbass and Masanga. Rail Transport In Liberia
Railways in Liberia comprised two lines from the port of Monrovia in the northwest, and one line from the port of Buchanan, Liberia, Buchanan in the centre. The lines were built between 1951 and 1964 principally to transport iron ore. All three lines closed down, two due to the effects of the two Liberian Civil War (other), Liberian Civil Wars (1989–1996 and 1999–2003). The Bong Mine Railway recommenced operations in 2003. Guinea has 1,155km of railways. This comprises 366km at gauge and 789km at gauge. The latter includes 662km in common carrier service from Kankan to Conakry most of which is abandoned. Based on the 2021 national mid-term census, Kenema has a population of 255,110. making it the second most populous city in Sierra Leone after Freetown, and the largest city in the country's Eastern Province, Sierra Leone, Eastern Province.
