Raiganj
Raiganj (), is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal and it stands on the bank of the Kulik river. This city is the headquarters of the Uttar Dinajpur district. The city situated in the narrow strip which joins the Northern and Southern portion of the state of West Bengal, has come up in prominence as a result of partition of India. Etymology The origin of the name "Raiganj" is not exactly known, and is debated. Some say the name is linked to the royal family of Dinajpur whose surname was Rai. The widely accepted view is that the name originated from the abundance of rai sorshe (a special type of mustard) crops at this place from time immemorial. Many people think that the word "Raiganj" came from "Rai" meaning " Radha", the consort of Krishna. In this connection, "Kaliaganj", nearest city to Raiganj, comes from "Kalia" meaning "Krishna", the central character of '' Mahabharata''. Uttar Dinajpur (), also known as North Dinajpur, is one of the 23 districts of the state of West Bengal in India. The district is the part of Malda Division. Raiganj city is the headquarters of the district. This district bifurcated on 1 April 1992 from the erstwhile West Dinajpur district. History Undivided Dinajpur district was part of the Pundra and Gauda Kingdom of ancient Bengal. The whole of Pundra was part of the Mauryan empire, and Jainism was spread in the region in the fourth century BCE. Their capital was at Pundrabardhan (now in Bangladesh), and two other ancient towns were Gourpur and Kotibarsha, now called Bangarh. Later multiple inscriptions show how the Guptas also controlled Pundra. After the reign of Gauda Kingdom, the district was then ruled by Pala Empire from 750 CE. Raiganj Railway Station
Raiganj railway station serves Raiganj city in Uttar Dinajpur district in the Indian state of West Bengal. History was connected to Parbatipur, now in Bangladesh, in 1889, by Assam Behar State Railway. With the partition of India, links with East Pakistan were lost. The Barsoi–Radhikapur sector became a branch line. In the early 1960s, when Farakka Barrage was being constructed, a more radical change was made. Indian Railways created a new broad-gauge rail link from Calcutta. The -long Farakka Barrage carries a rail-cum-road bridge across the Ganges. Krishna Kalyani (born 26 June 1979) is an Indian politician and industrialist. He is currently serving as member of West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Raiganj constituency. Political career Krishna Kalyani joined Bharatiya Janata Party on 24 January 2021. He represents the Raiganj Vidhan Sabha constituency which he won in 2021 as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. He announced his resignation from BJP on 1 October 2021 and joined All India Trinamool Congress on 27 October 2021.
