This is a list of radio stations in the Wellington Region of New Zealand. Note: Several FM stations changed their frequency during October 2010, as broadcast licences were renewed and spacing standardised to 0.8 MHz. AM stations were also moved in 1978 when New Zealand switched from 10 kHz frequency spacing to 9 kHz spacing. As a general rule, frequencies in Wellington are spaced 0.8 MHz apart, starting from 89.3 MHz. Kiwi FM
Kiwi FM (formerly Channel Z) was a New Zealand alternative music radio network. From 1996 to 2005, as Channel Z, it broadcast alternative and local music for a youth-oriented market. From 2005 to 2015, as Kiwi FM, it broadcast predominantly New Zealand independent music, to showcase local music across a wide range of genres and enable greater access to an international market for local contemporary artists. The station broadcast in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch on FM frequencies and globally through an internet stream. During its later years it operated as a non-profit subsidiary of MediaWorks New Zealand, and was affiliated with XFM and Triple J. Radio Windy
Radio Windy was a local radio station in Wellington, New Zealand, Wellington, New Zealand. It was started in 1973 and in 1993 was rebranded as The Breeze (New Zealand radio station), The Breeze. History Radio Windy first started by ''Capital City Radio Limited'' broadcasting in Wellington in 1973 on 1080 kHz with the call sign 2XW. In 1976 the station moved to 890 kHz and in 1978, after the AM band spacing in New Zealand was adjusted from Channel spacing, 10 kHz to 9 kHz, the station moved to 891 kHz. In 1990, Radio Windy began broadcasting on 100.0 MHz in Wellington and the station was renamed to ''Windy FM'' and also continued to broadcast on 891 kHz. Easy Listening
Easy listening (including mood music) is a popular music genre and radio format that was most popular during the 1950s to the 1970s. It is related to middle of the road (MOR) music and encompasses instrumental recordings of standards, hit songs, non- rock vocals and instrumental covers of selected popular rock songs. It mostly concentrates on music that pre-dates the rock and roll era, characteristically on music from the 1940s and 1950s. It was differentiated from the mostly instrumental beautiful music format by its variety of styles, including a percentage of vocals, arrangements and tempos to fit various parts of the broadcast day. The Breeze (New Zealand)
The Breeze is a New Zealand radio station playing an adult contemporary music format owned by MediaWorks New Zealand. It airs in 25 markets across New Zealand and each market shows a mix of local and network programmes. The station reached its highest ever audience of 671,000 listeners in 2021. The Breeze launched a television channel called The Breeze TV in March 2020, which was acquired in December 2020 by Discovery, Inc. as part of its purchase of MediaWorks' television operations. Breeze TV became an online-only channel in March 2022. It ceased broadcasting in December 2022. Gold (New Zealand Radio Network)
GOLD is a New Zealand radio station playing classic hits and classic rock of the late 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s targeting an audience of listeners above 45 years of age. GOLD broadcasts as a network on AM and FM frequencies across New Zealand and is owned and operated by New Zealand Media and Entertainment (NZME). Its head office and studios are in central Auckland, alongside NZME's seven other radio networks. History GOLD went to air on 1 July 2020, taking over the FM frequencies held by Mix and the AM and low power FM frequencies previously used to broadcast Radio Sport. GOLD is a pure music format, while the AM/LPFM version carries a hybrid talk/music format aimed at the rural market. Mix was a greatest hits radio station in New Zealand, broadcasting music from the 1970s in music, 70s, 1980s in music, 80s and 1990s in music, 90s. Mix was owned and operated by New Zealand Media and Entertainment. Mix is targeted at 35 to 54-year-olds. Its head office and studios were located in Auckland CBD, central Auckland, alongside New Zealand Media and Entertainment's seven other radio networks. In September 2020, Mix was replaced with Gold (New Zealand radio network), Gold (see below). Mix had just one presenter; Breffni O'Rourke presented a show based in Nelson. Melanie Homer and later Tracey Donaldson also presented a nationwide breakfast show based out of Auckland. Radio Sport (previously Sports Roundup) was a New Zealand sports radio radio network, network and the talk radio, talkback sister network of Newstalk ZB. It held commentary rights for most cricket matches, international and domestic rugby union games, National Rugby League, NRL rugby league games, National Basketball League (Australia), trans-Tasman basketball and New Zealand tennis tournaments. The network also updated developments at golfing events, bowls tournaments and other sporting events. At other times Radio Sport played talkback and hourly news and sports updates. Urban Contemporary
Urban contemporary music, also known as urban music, urban pop, or just simply urban, is a music radio format. The term was coined by New York radio DJ Frankie Crocker in the early to mid-1970s as a synonym for Black music. Urban contemporary radio stations feature a playlist made up entirely of Black genres such as R&B, pop rap, quiet storm, urban adult contemporary and hip hop; Latin music such as Latin pop, Chicano R&B and Chicano rap; and Caribbean music such as reggae and soca. Flava (formerly Cool Blue 96.1) is a New Zealand classic hip hop and R&B music radio network. The network is owned by NZME Radio, and is operated and produced from the company's Auckland offices and studios on Graham Street. It competes directly with MediaWorks New Zealand's Auckland long-running modern urban music station Mai FM. Flava's current on-air lineup includes K'Lee, Azura Lane, Charlie Pome'e, Hadleigh Pouesi (Hadz) and DJ09. The Flava brand reaches an estimated 175,100 listeners every week, with 13,900 average weekly unique visitors to its website and about 228,000 likes on its Facebook page.
