Cockroach
Cockroaches (or roaches) are insects belonging to the Order (biology), order Blattodea (Blattaria). About 30 cockroach species out of 4,600 are associated with human habitats. Some species are well-known Pest (organism), pests. Modern cockroaches are an ancient group that first appeared during the Late Jurassic, with their ancestors, known as "Roachoid, roachoids", likely originating during the Carboniferous period around 320 million years ago. Those early ancestors, however, lacked the internal ovipositors of modern roaches. Cockroaches are somewhat generalized insects lacking special adaptations (such as the sucking Insect mouthparts, mouthparts of aphids and other Hemiptera, true bugs); they have chewing mouthparts and are probably among the most primitive of living Neopteran insects. They are common and hardy insects capable of tolerating a wide range of Köppen climate classification, climates, from Arctic cold to Tropics, tropical heat. Tropical cockroaches are often muc ... This species is native to western North America and abundant in the intermittent streams throughout central California. Once considered a single species, it has recently been split into a number of closely related species and subspecies. It is closely related to the Hitch, and together they form a species complex.Baumsteiger J, Moyle PB 2019A reappraisal of the California Roach/Hitch (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae, Hesperoleucus/Lavinia) species complexZootaxa 4543 (2): 221–240 The California roach derives its common name from its visual similarities to the roach of Europe, however they are not closely taxonomically related.Moyle, P.B. Roach (smoking)
A roach is the remains of a Joint (cannabis), joint or Blunt (marijuana cigar), blunt after most of it has been smoked. Most roaches are disposed of immediately after smoking a joint; however, some users will retain the roach for use at a later date. Some users maintain that smoking the roach again has a more intense high due to a high concentration of resin that gathers at the tip of the filter. Small metal clips to facilitate the smoking of a "roach" are called roach clips. Roach clips cover a wide variety of paraphernalia including alligator clips, forceps, hemostats, needle nose pliers, ceramic pieces with holes through them, and tweezers. In Europe, the United Kingdom and most Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth nations, "roach" can also refer to a bit of rolled thin cardboard in one end to serve as a mouthpiece - called a "Roach Tip", "Smoking Tip", "crutch" or "filter" in North America. The Giant Cockroach
The Giant Cockroach or The Roach (as translated by Miriam Morton, 1958) or Cock-The-Roach (as translated by Tom Botting, 1981), also popularly known by its Russian name Tarakanishche (), is a popular Russian children's fairy tale poem written by poet Korney Chukovsky in 1921. The poem was later published by Raduga Publishers in 1923 and is regarded as a cultural poetic heritage among Russophones. It tells the story of an overgrown cockroach who assumed power over mankind and animals by bullying and threatening them, only to fall prey to a sparrow in the end. In popular culture It is a common misconception that The Roach who scared everybody was Chukovsky's hint at Joseph Stalin. In fact, the poem was written way before Stalin came to power. This misconception was exacerbated by the famous "Stalin Epigram" by Osip Mandelstam, in which "giant moustaches of a cockroach are smiling" are given in Stalin's portrait, and some commenters think it was an intentional reference to Chuk ... Mane (horse)
On horses, the mane is the hair that grows from the top of the neck of a horse or other equine, reaching from the poll (horse), poll to the withers, and includes the forelock or foretop. It is thicker and coarser than the rest of the horse's coat, and naturally grows to roughly cover the neck. Heredity plays a role, giving some horses a longer, thicker mane, and others a shorter, thinner one. Some horses, such as those used in circuses or in mounted displays such as Cavalia, have manes allowed to grow down to their knees. Others have their manes deliberately shaved completely off for style or practical purposes. When ungroomed, however, the mane usually grows no longer than the width of the horse's neck, as natural wear and tear limit its potential length. The mane is thought to keep the neck warm, and possibly to help water run off the neck if the animal cannot obtain shelter from the rain. It also provides some fly protection to the front of the horse, although the tail is us ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Rutilus
''Rutilus'', commonly known as roaches, is a genus of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Leuciscidae, which includes the daces, Eurasian minnows and related fishes. This genus is a widely distributed lineage of leuciscids and ranges from West Europe to East Siberia. Taxonomy ''Rutilus'' was first proposed as a genus in 1820 by the French polymath Constantine Samuel Rafinesque with ''Cyprinus rutilus'' designated as the type species but also the type species by absolute tautonymy. ''Cyprinus rutilus'' was first formally described in the 10th edition of ''Systema Naturae'' by Carl Linnaeus with "European lakes" given as the type locality. In a phylogeographic study, Levin et al. (2017) argue that the Ponto-Caspian taxa including ''R. caspicus'', ''R. heckelii'' and ''R. stoumboudae'' could represent a single widespread species whose range extends to Siberia, to be named ''Rutilus lacustris'', whereas ''R. kutum'' is included in ''R. frisii''. Roach (headdress)
Porcupine hair roaches are a traditional male headdress of a number of Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Native American tribes in what is now New England, the Great Lakes and Missouri River regions, including the Potawatomi who lived where Chicago now stands. They were and still are most often worn by dancers at pow wows as regalia. The porcupine hair roach is often made of guard hair of the porcupine, the tail hair of the white-tail deer, moose hair, or artificial stiff hair; often the hair is dyed a bright color, such as red or yellow, which can symbolize a veteran of combat. Some roaches from the southern plains are made with black turkey (bird), turkey beards. The term roach also applies to the traditional Mohawk hairstyle worn by some warriors of some southern plains tribes such as the Pawnee people, Pawnee, Kiowa, and some Algonquian peoples, Algonquian tribes, such as the Mohegan and Lenape. This is where their hair is shorn like a horse’s mane which was considered ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

River Roach
The River Roach is a river that flows entirely through the England, English county of Essex. It is one of four main streams that originate in the Rayleigh Hills to the west, and flow east. They then flow towards the centre of the Rochford Basin, a circular feature which may have been caused by an asteroid impact in the Late Oligocene or Early Miocene periods. To the east of Rochford, the river becomes tidal, and is governed by the Crouch Harbour Authority. It joins the River Crouch between Wallasea Island and Foulness Island. To the west of Rochford, there is some doubt as to which of the four streams is officially the Roach. At Stambridge, there was a tidal mill from at least the 1500s, although few details are known until it was rebuilt in 1809. A pound was filled by the incoming tide, and was released to drive a water wheel as the tide fell. On spring tides, this gave around 7 hours of operation, which gradually decreased as the tides reduced, and at neap tides, the operation ...
