The Queen's Hotel was a large hotel, in Toronto, Ontario, located on the north side of Front Street, Toronto, Front Street, between Bay Street, Toronto, Bay and List of north–south roads in Toronto#York Street, York Street streets - the current site of the Fairmont Royal York, Royal York Hotel. In 1927 Canadian Pacific Railways acquired the Queen's Hotel, across the street from the newly opened Union Station (Toronto), Union Station, so it could demolish it, and build a larger hotel. History In 1844 four rowhouses, designed by John George Howard, John Howard, were combined to form a hotel by Patrick Sword, which opened as "Sword's Hotel", in 1856. In 1860 the hotel was renamed the "Revere House". The hotel was purchased, and renovated, by Captain Thomas Dick (hotelier), Thomas Dick, and renamed the "Queen's Hotel" in 1862. Mike Filey
Mike Filey (October 11, 1941 – July 30, 2022) was a Canadian historian, radio host, journalist and author. He was awarded the Jean Hibbert Memorial Award in 2009 for promoting the city of Toronto and its history. Early life Born in 1941 in Toronto, Filey attended high school at North Toronto Collegiate Institute and earned a degree in chemical technology from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. As a child, Filey lived with his family on Bathurst Street, just south of the iconic Honest Ed's. Career Filey began his career at what is now the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, working there for nine years. He then worked for five years at the Canadian National Exhibition and four years at Canada's Wonderland. Thomas Dick (hotelier)
Thomas Dick was a United Kingdom/Canada citizen, who worked as a sailor, a ship's captain, who later bought and operated Toronto's most luxurious hotel. Dick was born in 1809 or 1810, and went to sea at 14 years old, and had earned his master's certificate, and become a ship's captain, by the time he was 23. He and his wife immigrated to Canada in 1833 or 1834. They first settled in Niagara-on-the-Lake, then a shipbuilding port. Dick seems to have played a role in the shipbuilding there. He commanded the schooner ''Fanny'' in 1835. He commanded during the Battle of the Windmill in 1838. Dick started being part owner of the ships he commanded, later owning a small fleet of ships. John George Howard (born John Corby; July 27, 1803 – February 3, 1890) was the official surveyor and civil engineer for the government of Toronto in Upper Canada and later Canada. He was also the first professional architect in Toronto. He designed numerous public, commercial and residential buildings during the 19th century.
