Nie Xiaoqian
Nie Xiaoqian () is a fantasy story in Pu Songling's short story collection ''Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio'', and the name of its female lead character. Pu describes her appearance as "gorgeous; girl in paintings" (). The story has been adapted into numerous films and television dramas. The name is commonly rendered as Nip Siu Sin in Hong Kong adaptations in accordance with its Cantonese pronunciation. Plot Nie Xiaoqian is introduced as a beautiful female ghost. ''The Enchanting Shadow'' (, ''Sin neui yau wan'', ''Chi’en-nu Yu-Hin'', ''Qiàn yǚ Yōuhún'') is a 1960 Hong Kong drama film directed by Li Han-hsiang. It was entered into the 1960 Cannes Film Festival. The film was also selected as the Hong Kong entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 33rd Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. The film was an inspiration for the 1987 film ''A Chinese Ghost Story''. Plot At the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, the country was in ruins and the society was in turmoil. The scholar Ning Caichen went to collect rent and stayed overnight at Jinhua Temple, where he met the swordsman Yan Chixia. ''A Chinese Ghost Story'' ( zh, t=倩女幽魂, l=The Ethereal Spirit of a Beauty, cy=Sihnnéuih Yāuwàhn) is a 1987 Hong Kong horror film starring Leslie Cheung, Joey Wong and Wu Ma, directed by Ching Siu-tung and produced by Tsui Hark. The plot is loosely based on a short story about Nie Xiaoqian from Qing dynasty writer Pu Songling's ''Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio'' and is also inspired by the 1960 Shaw Brothers Studio film '' The Enchanting Shadow''. The film was popular in Hong Kong and several Asian countries, including South Korea and Japan. ''A Chinese Ghost Story II'' ( zh, t=倩女幽魂 II:人間道) is a 1990 Hong Kong romantic comedy horror film directed by Ching Siu-tung and produced by Tsui Hark. It is the sequel to ''A Chinese Ghost Story'' and is followed by ''A Chinese Ghost Story III''. Plot Following the events of the first film, Ning (Leslie Cheung) parts ways with the Taoist Yin (Wu Ma) and returns to his home village, which has since fallen on desperate times. Fleeing from cannibals, Ning winds up being imprisoned. Sharing a cell with Elder Chu, a renowned scholar, Ning apparently spends months languishing in prison.
