Prescot
Prescot is a town and civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley in Merseyside, England. It lies about to the east of Liverpool city centre. At the 2001 Census, the civil parish population was 11,184 (5,265 males, 5,919 females). The population of the larger Prescot East and West wards at the 2011 census totalled 14,139. Prescot marks the beginning of the A58 road which runs through to Wetherby, near Leeds in West Yorkshire. The town is served by Prescot railway station and Eccleston Park railway station in neighbouring Eccleston. History Prescot's name is believed to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon ''prēost'' "priest" + ''cot'' "cot", meaning a cottage or small house owned or inhabited by a priest, a "priest-cottage". Prescot Railway Station
Prescot railway station serves the town of Prescot, Merseyside, England. It is situated on the electrified Liverpool to Wigan Line. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by Northern Trains. It was opened in 1871 by the London and North Western Railway. Facilities The station is staffed throughout the day (as is standard with most Merseytravel stations), from 15 minutes prior to the start of service until 23:30 each day (including Sundays). The ticket office and main buildings are on the northbound platform, with a shelter on the opposite side. Train running information is provided via timetable posters and digital information screens; there are also customer help points on both platforms. Step-free access is available to each platform, though the footbridge linking the two has stairs. Prescot Playhouse
The Prescot Playhouse was an Elizabethan theatre in the town of Prescot, which was then in Lancashire. The playhouse was built before 1603, probably in the mid-1590s, and probably remained in theatrical use until 1609. It was one of the few free-standing theatres in England outside London, and probably hosted performances by the playing companies maintained by the Earls of Derby. Location The theatre's existence was discovered in court records by F. A. Bailey, a local historian, in 1952. The records describe the plot of land on which it stood as long on its north and south sides, on the east and on the west, "at the upper end of the street leading to Eccleston". Local tradition points to the site of a modern landmark on Eccleston Street, the Flat Iron Building, whereas the historian David George, following Bailey, placed it in the southeast corner of what was then common land known as Town Moss (just north of the modern junction of High Street and St Helens Road). Metropolitan Borough Of Knowsley
The Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley is a metropolitan borough in Merseyside, North West England. It covers several towns and villages, including Kirkby, Prescot, Huyton, Whiston, Halewood, Cronton and Stockbridge Village; Kirkby, Huyton, and Prescot being the major commercial centres. It takes its name from the village of Knowsley, though its headquarters are in Huyton. It forms part of the wider Liverpool City Region. Eccleston Park Railway Station
Eccleston Park railway station serves the Eccleston Park area of Prescot, Merseyside, England. It is situated on the electrified Merseytravel Liverpool to Wigan City Line, northeast of Liverpool Lime Street. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by Northern Trains, however the station is branded Merseytravel using Merseytravel ticketing. It was opened by the London & North Western Railway in July 1891. Electrification of this line was given the go-ahead in November 2010. On 17 May 2015, electric train services began on the Liverpool to Wigan line, operating Class 319 electric multiple units. Lancashire Watch Company
The Lancashire Watch Company of Prescot was founded in 1889 by Thomas P. Hewitt as a rival to the large American and Swiss watch companies. It failed in 1910. History Until the late 19th century, Prescot had been the centre of the watchmaking trade in England. The workers produced watch parts in small workshops attached to their cottages and were paid by piece work. By 1889 the ''American System of Watch Manufacturing'' meant that the Waltham Watch Company and others could produce watches at a much lower price and the town fell into decline. British Insulated Callender's Cables (BICC) was a major British cable manufacturer and construction company of the 20th century. It has been renamed after its former subsidiary Balfour Beatty. BICC was created via the merger of two long established cable firms, ''Callender's Cable & Construction Company'' and ''British Insulated Cables'', in 1945. William Dacre, 2nd Baron Dacre
William Dacre, 2nd Baron Dacre (''ca.'' 1319–1361) was an English peer. In the final months of his life, he was also 3rd Baron Multon of Gilsland. In some sources, he is called William de Dacre. Life Dacre was the son of Ralph Dacre, 1st Baron Dacre (''ca.'' 1290–1339), by his marriage to Margaret de Multon (died 1361), later ''suo jure'' Baroness Multon of Gilsland. Dacre inherited from his father (who commanded the English forces at the Battle of Dornock) the Barony of Dacre and from his mother that of Multon of Gilsland. He married Catherine Neville, daughter of Ralph Neville, 2nd Baron Neville de Raby, but died childless in 1361 and was succeeded in the baronies by his brother Ralph, who was later succeeded by another brother, Hugh.
