Punjabi cinema, also known as Pollywood or Punjwood, is cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Punjabi language, Punjabi-language widely spoken in the Indian state of Punjab, India, Punjab. It is based in Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Mohali. The cinema of Punjab has its beginnings with the 1928 production of ''Daughters of Today (1928 film), Daughters of Today'', the earliest feature film produced in the region in Lahore. The first sound film, ''Heer Ranjha (1932 film), Heer Ranjha'', using the sound-on-disc technology, was released in 1932. Since then, many films have been produced in Punjabi cinema, a number of which have received international recognition. Sheela (film)
''Sheela'' (), also known as ''Pind Di Kurhi'' (), sometimes spelled as ''Pind Di Kurri'' or Sheila, is a 1935 Indian Punjabi film directed by K.D. Mehra. It is the first Punjabi language film with sound and was made in Calcutta and released in Lahore, British India. According to British Film Institute website, "In 1935, Noor Jehan traveled to Calcutta with her sister Eidan, cousin Haider Bandi and brother Shafi. Calcutta was an important centre for films...." back in 1935. Mubarak Ali Khan and K.D. Mehra composed the music. Bhati Gate (; ) is one of the historic thirteen gates of the Walled City of Lahore in Lahore, Punjab (Pakistan), Punjab, Pakistan. Bhati Gate also serves as a union council located in the Ravi Zone. The gate is located near Data Darbar and is similar in design to Kashmiri Gate, Lahore, Kashmiri Gate. Background Bhati Gate entrance is located on the western wall of the Old City. It is one of the two oldest entry points into the Walled City which controlled the only major north-south thoroughfare during Ghaznavid period. The gate is said to be named after the Bhati clan. Pran (actor)
Pran Krishan Sikand (; 12 February 1920 – 12 July 2013), better known mononymously as Pran, was an Indian actor who worked in Hindi cinema. He was one of the most successful and respected actors in the history of Indian cinema; in a career spanning over six decades he was also one of the highest-paid actors of his time. Pran was in/famous for his villain roles, and a highly regarded character actor in Bollywood from the 1940s to the 1990s. He played heroes from 1940 to 1947, negative roles from 1942 to 1991, and supporting and character roles from 1967 to 2007. From the late 1940s through the 70s was the peak of Pran's career as a villain, especially in the 1950s and 60s: his interpretations were the first true personification of "evil" on the Indian screen, and the intensity of his portrayals of negative/villainous characters was such that the given name "Pran" fell into disuse. Nazir Ahmed Khan
Nazir Ahmed Khan (1904 26 August 1983) () was one of the founding fathers of Pakistan film industry. He was a versatile filmmaker, actor, director and producer. Personal life Nazir was born in 1904 in a Kakazai Pathan family in Lahore, Punjab, British India. He had at least three wives over the years. He was first married to his cousin Sikandara Begum (who was the sister of K. Asif, the legendary director of 1960 film Mughal-e-Azam). He later had a very short marriage with Sitara Devi, the legendary Kathak dancer. After their divorce, Sitara Devi married none other than Nazir's cousin K. Asif himself. In other words, she married first the husband and then the brother of Sikandara Begum. Nazir's last wife was film actress Swaran Lata. Nazir was the father of several children. Gul Hamid
Gul Hamid (1905-1936) was an Indian actor. He started his acting career in silent films and later played leading roles in talkies. He had many honors to his credit. He acted in ''Heer Ranjha'', the first film produced in Punjabi and in '' Seeta'', a talkie that won an honorary diploma in the 1934 Venice Film Festival and that was also the first Indian film shown at an International film festival. Hamid also wrote the script, acted in, and directed the film ''Khyber Pass'' (1936). Hamid died of Hodgkin's Disease in 1936. Life Gul Hamid was born in Pirpiai; nowshera, a village near the Kabul River in the North West Frontier Province of British India (now in Pakistan). His father was Saif Ullah Khan. Abdur Rashid Kardar (2 October 1904 – 22 November 1989) was an Indian film actor, director and producer. He is credited with establishing the film industry in the Bhati Gate locality of Lahore, British India (now in Pakistan). Early life and career A.R.
