Puerto Rico At The 2008 Summer Olympics
Puerto Rico competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics which was held in Beijing, People's Republic of China from August 8 to August 24, 2008. The American territory with a population of four million people qualified 22 athletes in eight different sports. The appearance of the Puerto Rican delegation at the Beijing Olympics marked the commonwealth's sixteenth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics, and its twenty-second appearance at any Olympic Games, since its debut at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England. Of its competitors participating in events that involve progression by heats, six athletes advanced at least one round in their events, and two advanced at least two rounds, with Asunción Ocasio almost medaling bronze in taekwondo. Puerto Rico Olympic Committee
The Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (COPUR, ) is the National Olympic Committee for Puerto Rico. It oversees Olympic-sports in Puerto Rico, and selects the Olympic team which represents the island. It was founded by Julio Enrique Monagas, and was officially recognized in 1948. COPUR operates the ''Casa Olímpica'', its headquarters in Old San Juan. Puerto Rico at the Olympics, Teams representing Puerto Rico have participated in every Summer Olympics since 1948. They have also participated at the 1984–2002 and 2018 Winter Olympics. Dudley Dorival (born 1 September 1975) is a retired Haitian hurdler. He was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, United States. Dorival graduated from Ewing High School in 1993 and attended and competed at the University of Connecticut. He is best known for his bronze medal in 110 metres hurdles at the 2001 World Championships, which he won in a personal best time of 13.25 seconds. Born in the United States to Haitian parents, Dorival took Haitian nationality on July 29, 1999. Fajardo, Puerto Rico
Fajardo () is a town and a municipality part of the San Juan-Caguas-Fajardo Combined Statistical Area in Puerto Rico. Fajardo is the hub of much of the recreational boating in Puerto Rico and a popular launching port to Culebra, Vieques, and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. It is also home to the largest marina in the Caribbean, called Puerto del Rey. The town contains various hotels and inns. Offshore, near Fajardo, a few islets can be found. Héctor Cotto González (born August 8, 1984) is a Puerto Rican Olympic athlete specializing in the 110 meters hurdles. Background Cotto was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. His family moved to Irondequoit, New York, where he attended East Ridge Senior High School. When his family moved to Cary, North Carolina, he attended Green Hope High School and graduated in 2002. At Green Hope High, Cotto played football, ran track and field, and earned several all-conference honors for track. His personal best for the 110 and 55 meter hurdles ranked him at 11th in the nation in 2002. As of 2015, Cotto still holds several Green Hope High School records in track. Juan Pierre van Deventer (born 26 March 1983) is a South African middle-distance runner, who represented his country at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships. He won the bronze medal in the 1500 metres at the 2008 African Championships in Athletics. Later that year, he became the first South African man to reach the Olympic 1500 m final at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he finished sixth. David Freeman (born 28 April 1982) is a Puerto Rican middle distance runner. He was born in Miami,Florida USA and attended Hialeah High School in Hialeah, Florida. David started running Track & Field as a sophomore in high school. David was third in state championship in 800 meters as sophomore, second during his junior year and he won the state championship in the 800 meters during his senior year of high school (2000). While considered one of the top middle distance Track & Field runners in the state of Florida, David left Florida and earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Kentucky for Track & Field in 2000. Renny Quow (born 25 August 1987) is a Trinidadian male track and field sprinter who specializes in the 400 metres and has made it to both the Olympic and World Finals in the event, a rare feat for athletes from the Caribbean in the 400m. He competes professionally for Adidas. He was born in Tobago. Quow remains the only quarter miler from Trinidad & Tobago to make it to every major 400m finals (Olympics/Worlds/World Jrs/CAC/CARIFTA/Commonwealth Games).
