Puerto Rican Art
Puerto Rican art is the diverse historic collection of visual and hand-crafted arts originating from the island. The art of the Puerto Ricans (Spanish: ''puertorriqueños'' or ''boricuas'') draws from the various cultural traditions of the indigenous Taino people, as well as the history of the island as the subject of various other nations. Santos When the Spanish first arrived in Puerto Rico, one of their primary tools in converting the indigenous Taíno population were statuettes, known as Santos, depicting the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, and other Catholic icons (the practice of religious sculpture already existed on the island through the Taínos’ use of cemí figures). Arnaldo Morales
Arnaldo Morales (born 1967) is a Puerto Rico-born, New York-based artist who creates interactive, mechanical sculptures using recycled and fabricated industrial materials. Early life and education Morales was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1967. He received his B.A. from Escuela de Artes Plásticas, San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1994. He moved to New York in 1996. Career Morales’s work combines found, recycled elements from the waste of aviation, motor sports, household items, the medical industry, public transportation, prisons, pools, playgrounds and other sources with carefully detailed fabricated parts. He creates floor, wall, or ceiling-mounted sculptures (and at times, large-scale public commissions or strap-on, wearable objects) that are activated by viewers. Miguel Pou
Miguel Pou Becerra (24 August 1880 – 6 May 1968) was a Puerto Rican oil canvas painter, draftsman, and art professor. Together with José Campeche and Francisco Oller, he has been called "one of Puerto Rico's greatest masters." He was an exponent of the impressionist movement. During his life he exhibited in 64 shows, of which 17 were solo, and won five gold medals. Early years Miguel Pou was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, to Juan Bautista Pou Carreras and Margarita Becerra Julbe. Pou took drawing and painting lessons in Ponce. He began drawing with Pedro Clausells and painting with Spaniard Santiago Meana. History Of Puerto Rico
The history of Puerto Rico began with the settlement of the Ortoiroid people before 430 BC. At the time of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1493, the dominant indigenous culture was that of the Taíno. The Taíno people's numbers went dangerously low during the latter half of the 16th century because of new infectious diseases, other exploitation by Spanish settlers, and warfare. Located in the northeastern Caribbean, Puerto Rico formed a key part of the Spanish Empire from the early years of the exploration, conquest and colonization of the New World. The island was a major military post during many wars between Spain and other European powers for control of the region in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Cultural Diversity In Puerto Rico
Non-Spanish cultural diversity in Puerto Rico and the basic foundation of Puerto Rican culture began with the mixture of the Spanish-Portuguese (catalanes, gallegos, andaluces, sefardíes, mozárabes, romani et al.), Taíno Arauak and African (Yoruba, Bedouins, Egyptians, Ethiopians, Moroccan Jews, et al.) cultures in the beginning of the 16th century. In the early 19th century, Puerto Rico's cultures became more diversified with the arrival of hundreds of families from Non-Spanish countries such as Corsica, France, Germany, Greece, Palestine, Türkye, Pakistan, India, England, and Ireland. To a lesser extent other settlers came from Lebanon, China, Japan, Slavic countries of Eastern Europe and Scotland. Beatriz Santiago Muñoz
Beatriz Santiago Muñoz (born 1972) is an artist based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her work combines aspects of ethnography and theater to create film and video projects that have touched on subjects including anarchist communities, the relationship between artwork and work, and post-military land. Her work has been exhibited at the Tate Modern, thWhitney Biennial 2017 Galería Kurimanzutto, and the Guggenheim Museum. She is co-founder of Beta-Local, an art organization and experimental education program in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Career Beatriz Santiago Muñoz received an undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago in 1993 and an MFA in Film and Video from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1997. Pepón Osorio
Pepón Osorio (born 1955) is a Puerto Rican artist. He uses different objects as well as video in his pieces to portray political and social issues in the Latino community. He was born in 1955 in Santurce, Puerto Rico and studied at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, Lehman College, and also Columbia University, where he obtained his MA in sociology in 1985. His work is held by the Walker Art Center, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, El Museo del Barrio, el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, and by the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art. Antonio ("Toño") Martorell Cardona (born 18 April 1939) is a Puerto Rican people, Puerto Rican painter, graphic artist and writer. He regularly exhibits in Puerto Rico and the United States and participates in arts events around the world. Rafael Ferrer (artist)
Rafael Ferrer (born 1933) is a Puerto Ricans in the United States, Puerto Rican artist. He was a 1993 recipient of a Pew Fellowship in the Arts and a 2011 recipient of an Annalee and Barnett Newman Foundation Grant. He is the half-brother of actor José Ferrer and half-uncle of actor Miguel Ferrer. Life From an early age, Ferrer traveled between Puerto Rico and the United States, studying in his teens at Staunton Military Academy, and then at Syracuse University from 1951 to 1953. Since his years at Staunton, he learned to play drums, which began his involvement with Afro-Cuban music. At Syracuse, fellow students introduced him to the world of art through books, causing a failed attempt to register in the Art Department. Nayda Collazo-Llorens
Nayda Collazo-Llorens (born 1968 in San Juan, PR) is a visual artist whose work spans drawing, painting, printmaking, installation, video, and public art. Her work combines images, sound, and text to investigate how the mind processes information. While themes of displacement, alienation, and synchronicity permeate her videos and interventions, her text-based works explore post-alphabetic communication, hyperconnectivity and “noise” as systems of information. Collazo-Llorens is the granddaughter of the Puerto Rican literary critic, linguist, and lexicographer, Washington Llorens.
