Public Body (Netherlands)
In the Netherlands, the term public body (a literal translation from the Dutch language, Dutch term ) is the general denomination for administrative divisions within the Dutch state, such as the central government, a province, a municipality or a water board (Netherlands), water board. These types of political entities are defined by the Constitution of the Netherlands. In addition, Article 134 of the constitution provides for the definition of other public bodies by law. Such bodies can be professionally oriented, like the ''Dutch Order of Advocates'' (), or be constituted to perform functions in a specific region. This means that the term public body is sometimes used to indicate a special or irregular type of public body (without a specifically defined name), which can also be an administrative division or a certain other type of governmental organisation. Statistics Netherlands, founded in 1899, is a Dutch governmental institution that gathers statistical information about the Netherlands. In Dutch it is known as the Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (''Central Agency for Statistics''), often abbreviated to CBS. It is located in The Hague and Heerlen. Since 3 January 2004, Statistics Netherlands has been an independent public body, or quango. The Bottom
The Bottom (formerly ''Botte'') is the capital and largest town of the island of Saba (island), Saba, the Caribbean Netherlands. It is the first stop on the way from Saba's Port in Fort Bay towards the rest of the island. In 2001, it had 462 inhabitants of the total 1,349 islanders. It is the administrative center of Saba. History The first European settlements occurred around 1640, by colonists from Zeeland. After a landslide destroyed their original settlement, these settlers established a village in The Bottom. The original name of the village was ''De Botte'', old Dutch for "The Bowl", referring to its geographical position in a valley surrounded by the various mountains. "The Bottom" is an English corruption of this name. After the Dutch settlers, Irish, English, and Scottish settlers followed, along with enslaved Africans, and the main language of the island's villages became English. Flag Of Saba
The flag of Saba () was adopted on 6 December 1985 (national day of the island). 130 different designs were presented to the commission. The chosen flag was designed by an 18-year-old Saban named Edmond Daniel Johnson. Saba accepted Dutch sovereignty after 1816 and used the Dutch flag. However, since some islanders considered Saba a "republic", they added a special symbol – a green cabbage — to emphasize their independence, and this symbol was used probably until about the 1920s. The flag has two equal red triangles at the top and two equal blue triangles at the bottom, with a white diamond with yellow star in the middle. This colour was chosen to symbolise the island's wealth and hope for a good future. The star represents the island; the colours red, white and blue symbolise the link with the Netherlands. Alida Francis
M. Alida U. Francis is a Dutch civil servant who has been appointed island Governor of Sint Eustatius on April 10, 2024. She is the first woman to hold this position out of 400 Island Governors. Early life and education Francis was born and raised on St. Eustatius. Between 1977 and 1985 she lived in Aruba, where she obtained her HAVO diploma at the Colegio Arubano. She then went on to study journalism at the Hogeschool Utrecht. Career Her career started in 1989 as a broadcast journalist in Sint Maarten. A year later she transferred to the government, where she started working in the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Sint Maarten as a specialist in protocol and public relations. Oranjestad (; ) is a small town of 1,038 inhabitants; it is the capital and largest town of the island of Sint Eustatius in the Caribbean Netherlands. It is not to be confused with the far larger Oranjestad in Aruba. Geography Oranjestad is a historic harbour town which is divided into two main sections. Kralendijk () is the capital and main port of the island of Bonaire in the Caribbean Netherlands.
