Pterocarya × Rehderiana
''Pterocarya'', often called wingnuts in English, are trees in the walnut family Juglandaceae. They are native to Asia. The botanic name is from Ancient Greek (''pteron'') "wing" + (''karyon'') "nut". Description ''Pterocarya'' are deciduous trees, 10–40 m tall, with pinnate leaves 20–45 cm long, with 11–25 leaflets; the shoots have chambered pith, a character shared with the walnuts (''Juglans'') but not the hickories (''Carya'') in the same family. The flowers are organized in male and female catkins in the same tree. Therefore the species is monoecius. The seed catkins when mature (about six months after pollination) are pendulous, 15–45 cm long, with 20–80 seeds strung along them. The seeds are a small nut 5–10 mm across, with two wings, one each side. In some of the species, the wings are short (5–10 mm) and broad (5–10 mm), in others longer (10–25 mm) and narrower (2–5 mm). Thomas Nuttall
Thomas Nuttall (5 January 1786 – 10 September 1859) was an English botanist and zoologist who lived and worked in America from 1808 until 1841. Nuttall was born in the village of Long Preston, near Settle in the West Riding of Yorkshire and spent some years as an apprentice printer in England. Soon after going to the United States he met professor Benjamin Smith Barton in Philadelphia. Barton encouraged his strong interest in natural history. Early explorations in the United States In 1810 he travelled to the Great Lakes and in 1811 travelled on the Astor Expedition led by William Price Hunt on behalf of John Jacob Astor up the Missouri River. Nuttall was accompanied by the English botanist John Bradbury, who was collecting plants on behalf of Liverpool botanical gardens. ''Pterocarya rhoifolia'', commonly known as Japanese wingnut, is a species of tree in the family Juglandaceae. It is widely distributed throughout Japan, and also found in China in the Laoshan District of eastern Shandong Province. Its natural presence in China is contested. The tree flourishes in moist areas along riverbanks and mountain streams, and attains in height, flowering from May–July. It is a soft light wood, with the heartwood yellowish-white in color, which has been used as a substitute of ''kiri'' (''Paulownia tomentosa''), for example, to make ''Geta (footwear), geta'' clogs that are imitations of ''kiri''-geta. It is straight-grained and the pore pattern on the surface provides the wood with a handsome appearance.
