Protosticta Rufostigma
''Protosticta rufostigma'' is a damselfly species in the family Platystictidae. It is endemic to Western Ghats in India. The genus ''Protosticta'' has eleven species reported from India, of which nine are known from Western Ghats. It is currently known only from the type locality Naraikadu, which is a part of the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. It is closely related to ''Protosticta davenporti'' but can be distinguished by the larger pterostigma, difference in the pattern of prothorax and the eighth abdominal segment, and the shape of the anal appendages. Damselfly
Damselflies are flying insects of the suborder Zygoptera in the order Odonata. They are similar to dragonflies, which constitute the other odonatan suborder, Anisoptera, but are smaller and have slimmer bodies. Most species fold the wings along the body when at rest, unlike dragonflies which hold the wings flat and away from the body. An ancient group, damselflies have existed since at least the Lower Permian, and are found on every continent except Antarctica. All damselflies are predatory insects; both nymphs and adults actively hunt and eat other insects. The nymphs are aquatic, with different species living in a variety of freshwater habitats including acidic bogs, ponds, lakes and rivers. Platystictidae
Platystictidae is a family of damselflies, commonly known as shadowdamsels. They look very similar to the threadtail damselfly family (Protoneuridae). They can mostly be found throughout Asia, Central America, and South America. Most members of this family live in dense forests in the tropics where they are found around streams. Their wings are narrow and their abdomen slender and elongated. The adults probably do not disperse far as many species are known from a single location or have small ranges and there are probably other species as yet undescribed. The oldest members of the family belong to the genus '' Mesosticta'' from the Cenomanian aged Burmese amber Burmese amber, also known as Burmite or Kachin amber, is amber from the Hukawng Valley in northern Myanmar. Pothigai
The Pothigai Hills, also known as Agasthiyar Mountain is a 1,866-metre (6,122 ft)-tall peak in the southern part of the Western Ghats of South India. The peak lies in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu near the border of Kerala. The area contains several important natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including forests containing threatened species of significant value to science and conservation. Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve
Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) located in the South Western Ghats montane rain forests in Tirunelveli district and Kanyakumari district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is the second-largest protected area in Tamil Nadu. It is part of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve. History The Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve was created in 1988 by combining Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary (251 km2) and Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary (567 km2), both established in 1962. Notification of 77 km2 of parts of Veerapuli and Kilamalai Reserve Forests in adjacent Kanyakumari district, added to the reserve in April 1996, is pending. Protosticta Davenporti
''Protosticta davenporti'', Anamalai reedtail, is a damselfly species in the family Platystictidae. It is endemic to Western Ghats in India. Description and habitat It is a large slender damselfly with bottle-green eyes. Its head, prothorax, and thorax are similar to ''Protosticta gravelyi''; but the markings are more bluish. Abdomen is black, with the sides of segments 1 and 2 and the base of 3 bluish-white. Segments 4 to 7 are with narrow white basal annules. Segment 8 has its basal third pale blue. Segments 9 and 10 are without any marks and similar in length of ''P. gravelyi''. The shape of the anal appendages will serve to distinguish this species from all other ''Protosticta'' species. It is relatively common in hill streams of southern Western Ghats, south of the Palakkad Gap. It is found in forest streams with good riparian cover.
