Prostitute (Toyah Album)
''Prostitute'' is the third solo album by British singer Toyah Willcox, released in 1988 by E.G. Records. Background It is a concept album, highly experimental in nature, marking a considerable divergence from Toyah's previous works. It was inspired particularly by the scrutiny her recent marriage to Robert Fripp was under in the press, which made her feel that she "had gone from all-powerful artist to invisible woman". The material was written and recorded only by Toyah and Steve Sidelnyc in a space of a few weeks. It is presented as a continuous piece of music, although a time-code programme has been provided to enable the listener to access a particular title. To accommodate the two-sided format of the LP and cassette releases, side one – subtitled ''Lie Down'' – contains the first seven titles, and side two – subtitled ''Think of England'' – contains the rest of the album. Toyah Willcox
Toyah Ann Willcox (born 18 May 1958) is an English musician, actress, and TV presenter. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Willcox has had eight top 40 singles, released over 20 albums, written two books, appeared in over 40 stage plays and 10 feature films, and voiced and presented numerous television shows. Between 1977 and 1983, she fronted the band Toyah, before embarking on a solo career in the mid-1980s. At the 1982 BPI/Brit Awards, Toyah was nominated for British Breakthrough Act, and Best Female Solo Artist. Toyah was nominated a further two times in this category in 1983, and in 1984. Her hit singles include " It's a Mystery", " Thunder in the Mountains" and " I Want to Be Free". Childhood and early life Willcox was born on 18 May 1958 in Kings Heath, Birmingham. ''Toyah Solo'' is a compilation box set by British singer Toyah Willcox, consisting of seven CDs and a DVD, released on Edsel Records in 2020. Background The box contains most of Toyah's solo work from 1985 to 2003, featuring the six albums ''Minx'' (1985), ''Desire'' (1987), '' Prostitute'' (1988), '' Ophelia's Shadow'' (1991), ''Take the Leap!'' (1993) and '' Velvet Lined Shell'' (2003) alongside a CD of remixed, revisited and rare tracks and a DVD with promotional music videos and an interview. ''Rare, Remixed & Revisited'' was also released as a separate digital album. ''Kneeling at the Shrine'' is a 1991 studio album by the British rock band Sunday All Over the World, consisting of Toyah Willcox, Robert Fripp, Trey Gunn, and Paul Beavis. Background The band formed in 1988 and played a short tour under the name Fripp Fripp, during which Toyah performed material from her then-most recent album '' Prostitute'' as a support act. Then, having changed their name to Sunday All Over the World, they played more dates in 1989. ''Kneeling at the Shrine'' was the band's first and only studio album, released by E.G. Records in 1991, after which they disbanded. The album does not include all songs that the band was performing at the concerts. Hodder & Stoughton is a British publishing house, now an imprint of Hachette. Stuart Brisley
Stuart Brisley (born 1933) is a British artist. Education Brisley studied at Guildford School of Art from 1949 to 1954 and at the Royal College of Art from 1956 to 1959. In 1959–60 he attended the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, Germany, and from 1960 to 1962 studied at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, in the United States. Career In 1968 he took part in the occupation of Hornsey College of Art by staff and students, the "Hornsey sit-in". In the 1960s and 1970s he was active as a performance artist; his works were inspired by Marxist political ideas, and frequently used extended duration as an aspect of the performance.
