Prosecutor General Of The Maldives
The Prosecutor General of the Maldives is the chief legal officer responsible for conducting criminal prosecutions in the Republic of Maldives. The post was established under the 2008 Constitution, on 7 September 2008, and its primary role is to ensure the fair and impartial prosecution of criminal cases in the Maldives. The Prosecutor General (PG) is appointed by the President of the Maldives, with the approval of the People's Majlis, and serves for a term of five years, with eligibility for reappointment. Abbas Shareef (; born 19??) is a Maldivian lawyer who is currently serving as Prosecutor General of the Maldives, Prosecutor General since September 2024 and had previously served as the The President's Office, Secretary to the President on Legal Affairs under president Mohamed Muizzu and a High Court of the Maldives, Judge at the High Court of the Maldives from March 2011 to October 2015. The Judiciary in the Maldives has been a systematic institution throughout the history of the nation. It has always been an institution which is under the full control of the Head of State and is still to some degree. However a radical change occurred during the past decades, the introduction of the English legal system into the country; a result of the Maldivian society coming in close contact with the outside world. Consequently, the present legal system of the country is a mixture of not only Shari’ah and customs, but the English legal system also. Hussain Shameem () is a Maldivian lawyer who served as the Prosecutor General of the Maldives from December 2019 until his resignation on 22 August 2024. Career Shameem was first a member of the Clemency Board during the Nasheed administration. Prosecutor Generalship President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih sent his name for nomination for Prosecutor General (PG) to the People's Majlis (parliament) for approval after the previous PG, Aishath Bisam, resigned. On 8 December 2019, Shameem was appointed as Prosecutor General. On 31 January 2024, Shameem was taking a walk around Malé near Noor Mosque where he was attacked by an individual with a hammer.
