Propagation, Evolution, And Rotation In Linear Storms
The Propagation, Evolution, and Rotation in Linear Storms Project (PERiLS) was a field campaign led by the National Severe Storms Laboratory in 2022 and 2023 to study how tornadoes form within Squall line, squall lines. The project was led by Daniel Dawson at Purdue University. The project was the first to study and observe tornadoes within Quasi linear convective system, quasi linear convective systems (QLCSs). Research The project aimed to study the environments of QLCSs capable of producing tornadoes, while documenting mesocyclone formation and evolution within tornadic QLCSs. The project also studied damage produced by QLCSs. Anthony Lyza was a coordinating scientist on the PERiLS Project. National Severe Storms Laboratory
The National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather research laboratory under the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. It is one of seven NOAA Research Laboratories (RLs). NSSL studies weather radar, tornadoes, flash floods, lightning, damaging winds, hail, and winter weather out of Norman, Oklahoma, using various techniques and tools in their HWT, or Hazardous Weather Testbed. NSSL meteorologists developed the first doppler radar for the purpose of meteorological observation, and contributed to the development of the NEXRAD (WSR-88D). Squall Line
A squall line, or quasi-linear convective system (QLCS), is a line of thunderstorms, often forming along or ahead of a cold front. In the early 20th century, the term was used as a synonym for cold front (which often are accompanied by abrupt and gusty wind shifts). Linear thunderstorm structures often contain heavy precipitation, hail, frequent lightning, strong straight-line winds, and occasionally tornadoes or waterspouts. Particularly strong straight-line winds can occur where the linear structure forms into the shape of a bow echo. Tornadoes can occur along waves within a line echo wave pattern (LEWP), where mesoscale low-pressure areas are present. Some bow echoes can grow to become derechos as they move swiftly across a large area. Anthony W. Lyza is an American meteorologist and expert on tornadoes who heads the Testbed and Visualization Support Team, a branch of the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), one of the research laboratories of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Education Lyza attended Valparaiso University in Indiana, where he graduated in 2012 with a bachelor's degrees in meteorology.
