The Professorship of Geophysics is a statutory professorship at the University of Cambridge. It was founded in 1964. The Department of Earth Sciences at Cambridge is the University of Cambridge's Earth Sciences department. First formed around 1731, the department incorporates the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences. History The department's history can be traced back to 1731 when the 1st Woodwardian Professor of Geology was appointed, in accordance with the bequest of John Woodward. The present Department of Earth Sciences was formed by an amalgamation of the Department of Geology, Department of Geodesy and Geophysics and the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology in 1980. When the three departments were amalgamated the Chair of Geophysics and Chair of Mineralogy and Petrology, along with the Woodwardian Professorship, were assigned to the newly formed Department of Earth Sciences. Edward Bullard
Sir Edward Crisp Bullard FRS (21 September 1907 – 3 April 1980) was a British geophysicist who is considered, along with Maurice Ewing, to have founded the discipline of marine geophysics. He developed the theory of the geodynamo, pioneered the use of seismology to study the sea floor, measured geothermal heat flow through the ocean crust, and found new evidence for the theory of continental drift. Early life Bullard was born into a wealthy brewing family in Norwich, England. His maternal grandfather was Sir Frank Crisp and his paternal grandfather was Sir Harry Bullard, who had been an MP for Norwich. He was educated at Norwich School and later studied Natural Sciences at Clare College, Cambridge. He studied under Ernest Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory of University of Cambridge and in the 1930s he received his PhD degree as a nuclear physicist. Chris Chapman (seismologist)
Christopher Hugh Chapman (born 5 May 1945) is a British seismologist, an emeritus honorary professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge. Biography He was awarded a first degree in theoretical physics and a Ph.D. in geophysics by Cambridge University. He then moved to Canada to be an Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, and an Associate and Full Professor at the University of Toronto. He returned to Cambridge in 1984 to take up an appointment as Professor of Geophysics (Cambridge), Professor of Geophysics. In 1990 he joined Schlumberger Cambridge Research (SCR) as a Scientific Advisor until his retirement in 2005. He continues to consult for SCR and act as Emeritus Honorary Professor of Theoretical Seismology at Cambridge. He published the geophysics textbook “Fundamentals of Seismic Wave Propagation” in 2004. Bob White (geophysicist)
Robert (Bob) Stephen White (born 12 December 1952) is Emeritus Professor of Geophysics in the Earth Sciences department at Cambridge University and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society ( FRS) in 1994. He is Director of the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion. Biography Bob White is also a Fellow of St Edmund's College, Cambridge, prior to which he was a student and Research Fellow at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. A Fellow of the Geological Society, and a member of the American Geophysical Union and several other professional bodies; he serves on numerous of their committees.
